so these are the parts i need?

1 x 25550-CF40A (Audio & Cruise Control buttons)
2 x 87850-89900 (Air-bag Torx bolts)
1 x 25567-EN025 (Spiral Cable)
No.

1 x 25550-CF40A (Audio & Cruise Control buttons)
2 x 87850-89900 (Air-bag Torx bolts)
1 x B5567-CF40A (Spiral Cable) -< different to the above and must get this from Australia (see pic in detailed explanation for why).

the audio control buttons and air-bag bolts are consistent with US part numbers so can be sourced from anywhere.

no worries thanks for that.. I rung up my local dealer and was quoted $316+GST Sound reasonable??
I bought mine from the US but grouped it with other items so it was cost effective with shipping. Not sure how much cheaper it would work out (if at all) to source the buttons only from the US. I remember there being a bit of a price difference.

Doing the easy route - I was quoted by an Aussie dealer on Gold Coast $314 incl GST with FREE SHIPPING to my door.

Buttons - 25550-CF40A $150
Bolts - 87850-89900 $2ea
Spiral Cable - B5567-CF40A $160

I'm also thinking that as the OEM SAT NAV controls go through plug M39 any dealers who installed one of these in a 2006+ model as an option may have an install guide. This might also have a part # for the proper harness... This would save on needing to run the additional wires and makes the install closer to a "plug n' play".

Something I will look into.

^^ Nice find. Hopefully its the right model.

My audio shop got back to me on adding the extra resistors and also a new spindle motor which they recommend (completed by Clarion). Price is a little more than the average price for a second hand head unit but I do get to keep my orginal headunit.

Car is booked in early next year to have it done :) Turnaround time is one week.

Hello,
Just curious; are there any updates on this customisation yet?
Did they manage to get the early model Bose HU to respond to the steering wheel remote controls?

cheers

The last Steps:

First of all I would like to thank the guys down at No Limit Electronics, especially Mark, who assisted greatly with this this project. And also to member Mark (GreyArea) for his assistance in confirming the right parts were sourced

So back on post #16 I said there were a few options for which I was going to follow up with. One of those which was most appealing to me was to add the missing resistors in the headunit. Thanks to Mark and the numerous follow-up calls to Clarion they were able to confirm that the additional missing resistors could be added. Clarion also recommended the the spindle motor (I actually dont know what this is or does inside the headunit) should also be replaced from these units. Maybe its a tidy profit maker or not but I did that as well.

I should have grabbed some more pics of the head unit before it was shipped off to Clarion but the M39 plug doesn't exist on our headunits. There was a guy seling one for a handsome price on eBay recently which showed this clearly. Part of the work done by them was to add this as well so those handy with electronics should feel pretty comfortable giving this mod a go.

There was a one (1) week turn-a-round time with Clarion. Exactly how the resistors were added, sorry but I don't know. The repair cost me $250.

Overall, yes it can be done and costs ~$315 in parts + $250 in headunit repairs = ~$565 plus 2 hours of labour.

I wasn't able to get the name/contact at Clarion who completed the repair as the shop dealt directly with Clarion. If your interested give No Limit a call and I'm sure the guys there can help you out.

Oh, a link to the final product!

Thanks for the update.

I am going ahead with this mod also, and may have figured out the missing part required for the earlier model Bose HU:

The M39 and M46 connectors are soldered onto a sub-PCB assembly that plugs into the main PCB of the Bose HU.

Here is a photo of an '07 Bose HU (Model "CR01D" / PP-2546L) M39 and M46 connector sub-PCB assembly, where we know the '07 has the steering wheel remote functionality as standard:

The Clarion part number is: 039-2775-00-B
You can clearly see the small resistors on the PCB that Clarion was probably referring to.

I don't know how you would go about ordering this PCB, as I just bought on old '07 Bose HU from Eugene (thanks Eugene!), which is what the photos are of. You could probably try contacting Clarion I suppose, as I doubt Nissan would get involved with internal parts from the Clarion/Bose HUs.

So, if you have an -2003-2005 Bose HU, and you can get this part from somewhere, I suspect that it is simply a matter of taking off the lower cover of your Bose HU, unplugging the old board and plugging in this newer one. Then, all you need is the rest of the parts as identified by Aust350z, a few extra wires between the HU and the steering wheel cord, and it should also all work together - in theory.

I am going to try to do it all myself as soon as the other parts arrive, so will let you know how it goes.

Thanks to Aust350z for all the effort!

cheers,
Paul

Thanks Tony! :)

Paul - Awesome work. I just don't have the skills or knowledge to play around with the electronics like that, hence, I had to leave it in the hands of the pros.

Aparently the faceplate of the headunit can be pulled off your 03 and fitted to the newer one so it fits perfectly. May save needing to mess with the resistors. Might be something to consider as well as swapping the resistors around.

Looking forward to your next update.

Be interested to see how it goes. I rang Clarion and spoke to Michael in repairs/service. He recalled doing the mod on a 350z HU. I quoted the part # and described the PCB - not sure I was fully understood, but his reply was there were mods required on the main board as well. He said about $170 to mod my 2003 HU + postage + of course OEM Nissan parts.

Steve - what 'stealthy' mod - only a true Z-aficianado would pick up on not being standard...sort of mixed feeling about spending nearly $600 myself though just to bring it up to date...but a big impact on enjoyment every time I get in the car.

Mark - what I haven't posted yet is the iPod adapter I had done at the same time. Works a treat with the controls.. even more enjoyment and use :)

$170 for the repair? Sounds like I the price is coming down cheap already..

Ok - all the parts arrived last week and the mod is now done.

I swapped in the '07 head unit, without having to ship out my '03 HU. The face plates are interchangeable, so it looks exactly as it was before. If you only have your '03 HU to work with - I would just get the $170 mod done from Clarion as described above, as you can't really mod it yourself without the software upgrade anyway. Much simpler.

Issues:
One of the illumination circuit wires does not exist in the '03 wiring harness - this is one referred to above as pin 7 on connector M40 (on the Bose HU). It is easy to solve this problem though, by simply grounding the wire from pin 27, connector M23 on the spiral cable unit - I just attached it to the chassis of the HU.

It is really difficult to make the connections to the pins on these various sockets from the custom 5-wire harness you need to build, without some tiny female, square crimp connectors that fit the pin size of the connector's socket pins exactly. I was lucky enough to find some "Duratech" ones at Jaycar electronics store that are perfect for the job - crimping is the ideal way to terminate these wires, however soldering could also be ok if you can handle very fine work like that, as the pins need to be inserted into your existing harness plug M23 that plugs into the spiral cable unit. I have an AMP crimping tool that does the job however.

By the way - the M39 connector is actually on the '03 harness behind the HU - with one wire run to it. It is not used for anything though - so you can try and fit your pins into this connector and use it if you can - I did have trouble getting the pins into this connector as it is fractionally smaller than the M23 connector where these pins do fit nicely. So I had to install them into M39 without the plastic male part of the connector as per below - If you do this remember to insulate the whole connector with tape so that that they do not come into contact with the neighbouring pins (photo is without the tape).

The '07 head unit works fine, however it normally has a different illiumination logic for the display backlight. So when the '03 face plate is fitted, and the head lights are turned on, the display dims down - not completely though, so it is still actually fine. It is the opposite behaviour with the '07 design face plate because the LCD display background is black, not orange, and digits are orange, not black!

DONE - after pulling everything apart again three times to figure out wiring issues! Make sure you do a continuity check with a multimeter, end to end, after you install the custom harness - before you put the gauge cluster back in and the steering wheel back on.. :xZ!o:
Image

<div align='left'>The other thing to be wary of is to re-install the ABS braking system's steering angle sensor unit that is also attached to the back of the spiral cable unit normally - you will see it attached to the old '03 one you pull out.

I'm quite pleased with the results, and just came back from a weekend away with the car - it is great to be able to actually "see" the cruise control buttons in the dark, and also of course the audio controls are great. I also have the USA SPEC NIS-11 iPOD interface installed, so it controls the iPOD remotely very well indeed - search/skip through your iPOD tunes all from the wheel!

cheers!
