Guys,

I was wondering if someone with a 2006+ model Z would be willing to share there VIN number with me (privately through PM) for a part order. I'm after a specific part from the 2006+ models yet the guy at the parts department can only look them up with a VIN number. I can't use mine as it a 2003. (if your not willing to share but call on my behalf that would be OK with me).

I've tried searching through the parts lists at EverythingNissan.com and Courtesyparts.com without success. I've also searched this forum, the other site and googled extensively.

Specifically I'm after the part number for the 8-pin spiral cable in the steering wheel found in these models. I've already been able to identify the part numbers for the other pieces I'm after (whicha re undocumented on the parts lists on those sites).

Obviously if you have the part number or know of it that would be even better :)

Cheers,

After a lot of searching and reading of service manuals that I can barely understand I think I found the part number for what I was after. It's a tough one to track down!

****... seems the part number isn't valid when searching other sites for better pricing. Aussie parts guys also don't get this part number to come up. They still need a valid VIN.

This is what I'm after though. All in the name of getting OEM steering wheel audio controls at an affordable price so its worth the effort :) I really just need the wiring out of this but so far this is closest I've gotten to finding that.

I thought I'd share what I've found out so far in the hopes that someone might be able to help. This is to get the audio controls to work on a 2003-2005 steering wheel replacing only required parts. I estimate that the required parts will cost about AU$230 shipped to Australia. I haven't done it yet so I don't know if it works or not.

The Spiral Cable:
The 2006 and 2005 (I think 2004 and 2003 as well) spiral cable all have the same harness plug.
The 2006 has 8 pins.
The 2005 has 7 pins.
The 2006 cruise/audio/horn steering wheel controls use all 8 pins.
The 2005 cruise/horn steering wheel controls use 3 out of the 7 pins.

The Wiring:

Edited post from member on my350z:

2003 Spiral Cable
The factory cruise control on the 03 uses 3 wires: two for the cruise, one for the horn ground.

2006 Spiral Cable
The 06 uses 8 wires: 2 for the cruise, one for the horn ground, 2 for illumination (a power and a variable, dimmable ground) and 3 for the radio controls (two control wires and a ground).

Difference
The 03 spiral cable carries seven available wires from the wheel to the steering column. The 03 only uses 3 of the 7, the 06 requires 8. There are two solutions:

Solution 1:
Order an 06 spiral cable (also called a "clockspring" or "combination switch").

Solution 2:

Cut the variable ground used for illumination dimming inside the steering wheel and grounded it to a screw in the steering wheel.

This means that the 06 controls will fully function using the 03 spiral cable. 2 for cruise, 3 for the radio, 1 ground for the horn and now, one power wire for illumination. (since the illumination is now grounded to the steering wheel and doesn't require transit through the spiral cable.)

As far as rigging the extra wires into the steering column side of the spiral cable....The factory 03 steering column plug uses 3 of the available 7 slots. You need to install 4 female connectos to plug into the column side of the spiral cable. (3 for the radio, one for illumination power)

I didn't have an old floppy drive, but I found some at radio shack. They were in the computer parts drawer. Radio shack #276-1428. It's called "9 position Female D-Sub Connector" It comes with about 12 female jacks (you only need 4) and a jack that looks like a serial port. (You can throw this part away.

For illumination, There is a red and blue wire that leaves the back of the TCS switch. This wire carries switched power for illumination. Just tap this wire to the illumination power wire that you hook into the spiral cable.

Required Parts:
1 x 25550-CF40A (Audio & Cruise Control buttons)
2 x 87850-89900 (Air-bag Torx bolts)
1 x 25567-Z33003 (Spiral Cable) <<--- incorrect #

I not sure of everything yet... but so far I think that this will work in our Z's. I have more reading of service manuals to see how all the wiring fits together. Personally I want to go for pure OEM with the dimming feature and not resort to having to wire my 03 spiral cable up. Therefore if anyone can help getting a part number for an 06 spiral cable/combination switch it would be greatly appreciated.

Getting closer. The imfamous spiral cable part number has been identified for purchase in Australia. Yet a part number search of this at Courtesy Parts still brings up the same part I listed above.

Required Parts:
1 x 25550-CF40A (Audio & Cruise Control buttons)
2 x 87850-89900 (Air-bag Torx bolts)
1 x 25567-EN025 (Spiral Cable)

Will make a mess of the wiring diagrams over the weekend and see if anything else will be needed.

All Courtesy part numbers end in Z33-something. Those are their internal numbers, not Nissan factory part numbers.

Closely following your research Steve - this something I sorely miss esp with the volume all the way over there for the LHD market. Mostly nearly every time I get into a car without steering audio I instinctive reach over and mess up the tuning thinking I'm adjusting volume :banghead:

Ive had this same problem in the past with tracking parts and needing VIN n.o. For future ref, the easiest way to find a VIN n.o for a particular year of vehicle, is to log on to used dealer cars on carsales.com. They supply supply VIN n.o on the net so you can do revs checks.

#12 ·
I've looked at the wiring diagrams between the years. What I'm unsure of at present is what wires are in our z's at the moment. Nissan also removed a resistor in the cruise function between these years but I don't think that will affect installation.

At this stage I think it's possible. There may be a little wiring required but I won't really know until getting the steering wheel off.

I'm going to purchase the parts during week and seek help from an audio shop for the installation. I would rather them doing any required wiring. Will let you know how it goes.

The updated controls and spiral cable arrived last night.

Just need TomTom to relaease the car kit cradle for the iPhone (which I think can also be used as an iPhone adapter) to attempt the install.

#15 ·
Mark, I've got the controls in, the wires run (correctly) but ran into trouble with the headunit which is currently being resolved. I have a write-up on the work computer I did late one night that will explain what is required for Aus spec cars. I'm almost there :)

Wiring 350Z Steering Wheel Controls into an Australian 2003 350Z

Background
It has generally been agreed that installing the 2006 audio controls on a 2003-2005 model was too hard and professional audio technicans thought it "too hard". The closest I could find anyone here in Australia attempting this was Domino back in April 2006 with another query in May 2008. Again no one seems to have tried seriously since 2006.

The results were that the cruise buttons worked but did not illuminate and were eventually hardwired to constantly be on. The radio buttons were not attempted given an aftermarket HU was installed.

However, this install has been successful in US.

My attempt November 2009
This is to be used as a guide only to assist owners wanting to install the audio controls from 2006+ models into 2003-2005 Australian delivered models. I had the following completed by an experienced audio technican and therefore do not have photos or guides available for the additional wiring required. Professionally it should not take more than 3 hours to complete.

The Parts

Required Parts:
1 x 25550-CF40A (Audio & Cruise Control buttons)
2 x 87850-89900 (Air-bag Torx bolts)

The audio & cruise buttons are one single piece and joined together as Domino had shown previously. Also included in the picture is the required airbag torx bolts. You WANT to get these! At $2-4 a pop they will save you a lot of hassle when you strip the exisiting bolts trying to get them out. Part numbers are consistent between Australia and the US.

<div align='center'>

1 x B5567-CF40A (Spiral Cable) -< different to the above.
As Domino and the Americans had noted (and I have posted abve in this thread) there are additional wires that run through the steering wheel. This part is known as the combination switch or spiral cable. This part ensure thats the wires do not get tangled when turning the steering wheel. I orginally purchased one from America with part number 25567-EN025. This part used to have an Australian equivilent of 25567-ET025. It has since been superseaded with the above cable. This part must be purchased from Australia as US airbags require two wires and not one as shown below.

The Wiring - The Theory

From the 2003 Service manual we are able to determine that there are 3 wires that are used in the combination switch (spiral cable) which control only the cruise control.

Per the 2006 Service Manual there are an additional 5 wires from the steering wheel controls. Two (2) of these control the illumination of the switches and other three (3) control the audio controls linked to the OEM Bose head unit. Within the back of the Bose head unit there are four plugs.

The following diagram shows how the plugs (M39, M40, M41 and M46) fit into the back of the Bose head unit:

<div align='center'>Picture 1 – Wiring Plug Diagram
Image

The following is an example of the Bose head unit (confirmed ours look like this) from the rear.

<div align='center'>Picture 2 – OEM Bose head unit (rear)

The picture above shows the four (4) plugs as identified in red in Picture 1 as follows:

  1. M40
  2. M41
  3. M39
  4. M46

The below pictures shows what each pin does in the back of the Bose head unit.

Picture 3 - What the plugs/pins do
<div align='center'>
Image

Based on the 2006 wiirng diagram the additional cables from the spiral cable need to be run to plug M39 (as shown in picture 3). These are explained below.

<div align='center'>Picture 4 – 2006 Service Manual wiring diagram (page AV-15)
Image

This requires three (3) wires to be run from:

  • Pin 31 (M23) to Pin 25 (M39) to control power & mode (ground wire)
  • Pin 24 (M23) to Pin 22 (M39 to control volume down
  • Pin 32 (M23) to Pin 23 (M39) to control volume up.
Additionally the two (2) illumination wires need to run (or tapped into) from the same source as pins 7 & 8 (M40) from the Bose head unit to control the illumination of the steering wheel controls (M23).

The Result

After following the above instructions I had the following results.

<div align='center'>
Image

  • Illumination - Yes. When parkers come on :)
  • Cruise - Yes. Just like before.
  • Audio - No.
The problem solving then started on why the audio controls weren't working. We identified that first that our Australian delivered head units do not have a M39 plug. To get around this we ended up soldering directly to the pins but still this didn't work.

A call to Clarion (what the relationship is with Bose I don't know) was of great help. The contact at Clarion is the guy who repairs broken Bose head units. The advised that the reason that what we had done wasn't working was because the head unit was not wired correctly (ie with the resistors/software) to be able to manage the steering wheel controls. Fark! What he did advise was that the 2006 would definately work. It was then that we discussed sourcing a 2006 to test this out.

This led us to track down part numbers:

US: Model# PP-2514L
Aus: Model# PP-2546L (2003-2005) Model# PP-2546LD (2006+)
UK: Model# PP-XXXXL

(It is easy to tell which model you have from the tape deck. If you look closely 2003-2005 should be CR-250 and 2006+ should be (I think) CR-16. Importantly, US models will not work in Australia, so dont go sourcing one. However, UK ones will. I am yet to track down a model number these.

This also brought up another problem. The 2006 head units are a different size and also a different colour and this was not acceptable. Clarion have advised that the 2003-2005 faceplate can be removed and retrofitted to the 2006 model easily. This was looking more positively as this would also mean MP3 capability while keeping OEM look.

So where am I at?
Therefore, at this stage Clarion is trying to source a 2006 head unit so we can test it out and see if it works. They will not send me one from their current repaired stock so I am currently on the look out for one in classifieds to test this out. If someone has one hanging around (particualrly in Melbourne) please shoot me a PM. If it plugs in (before modifying faceplate) you'll have a buyer :). Additionally, he is looking into seeing what is required to add the additional resisitors/software to the 2003 head unit to allow the controls to work.

Things to try:
- try using a 2006 Australian headunit
- try using a 2006 UK headunit (will lead to OEM bluetooth project :))
- Find M39 plug and try again (instead of direct soldering)
- Build extra resistors in 2003 head unit
- give up

I am almost there. Wish me luck!

after all that hard work, by all means don't give up.. there are tonnes of 2006 head units lying around from zed owners swapping them out for after market head units.. just keep trying to source one...

This should work with aftermarket headunits too? I for example have an Eclipse AVN6000... The guys at Northfield Moorooka said that they can make the steering wheel controls work, but ofcourse I have only a 2003 model...

Yes. You will need something like this plus the additional wiring above from the steering wheel.

PAC SWI-ECL2

I notice that the AVN6000 isn't mentioned (but may still work) with this. Otherwise the PAX SWI-X is the universal version. I'd check with you audio shop as to which is best to use. You can grab this from eBay for about A$50 + shipping.

Devices specific to other audio brands are also available from PAC.

no worries thanks for that.. I rung up my local dealer and was quoted $316+GST Sound reasonable??
I bought mine from the US but grouped it with other items so it was cost effective with shipping. Not sure how much cheaper it would work out (if at all) to source the buttons only from the US. I remember there being a bit of a price difference.

Doing the easy route - I was quoted by an Aussie dealer on Gold Coast $314 incl GST with FREE SHIPPING to my door.

Buttons - 25550-CF40A $150
Bolts - 87850-89900 $2ea
Spiral Cable - B5567-CF40A $160

I'm also thinking that as the OEM SAT NAV controls go through plug M39 any dealers who installed one of these in a 2006+ model as an option may have an install guide. This might also have a part # for the proper harness... This would save on needing to run the additional wires and makes the install closer to a "plug n' play".

Something I will look into.
