Optimum/minimum oil and coolant temperature

Looking for what are the minimum and "best" operating temps. The car runs great and as it is about to be summer I am not worried about too cool but I'd like to know where my temps should be.

I drove over an hour and a half yesterday morning in 60 degree temps and had 155-170 coolant and 100 oil temps.

On the way home in 70-90 degree temps it came up to the 190s and 130 ranges.

Soon it will be over 90 at all times so I am in no rush to do anything but I need to know where oil and coolant temps need to be (min to max)

From the searching I have done, you want to be closer to 180 degrees min temp. This will allow any fuel or water to evaporate out of the system.

I would probably cover the cooler in your "winter" to keep the oil temps up. Another thing you could to is get a thermostatic sandwich plate. It will only allow oil to flow through the cooler when it is up to a certain temp range.

I have a Mocal with thermostat. The oil temp sensor is in the hose on the input side before the cooler.

**** quality cooling solutions!

lol

If your sensor is between the sandwich plate and the cooler, how do you know oil is flowing? Did it say at what temperature the thermostat kicks over at?

This whole thing is kinda relevant because I am looking at making an oil cooler when my car gets back. It was recommended to not run a thermostat though.

The sandwich plate only diverts oil through the cooler when it hits a specific temp, it will bypass the cooler until it gets hot to open. Did the documents say how hot it has to get for it to open? You could just be reading oil temp that is getting hot through radiant heat from the block.

The cooler and sensor are between the bumper and radiator. No real temps there.

I just drove for about 20 minutes, parked in an underground lot and then drove slowly out through two levels. Water temp got to 207 oil to 170 it immediately came down to 190/120 when I got out into the street.

I also have a big finned radiator and am running a gigantic filter so there are almost 3 extra quarts. maybe I need less oil.

I have no clue where the sandwich thermostat opens. It says 180 which must be Fahrenheit. :dunno:

It is already 90 here by 1pm. In the less than 5 minutes it took me to take the picture, get it out of the camera and upload it is up to 91.

It made it to 97 in my backyard yesterday. Soon it will not be below 90 at 5am.

Since I am not throwing any codes I guess it is ok.

Plot thickens. I just changed the Castrol EDGE Ti 5-20 with Pennzoil Ultimate 5-20 and immediately temps are up to 140. Ambient is 72 water is at 200.

Can the Castrol be doing that much better at cooling?

Only difference is a few degrees ambient and Pennzoil Ultra.

The new 150psi gauge is in.
