On Monday I got my Zs state inspection completed at Nissan (I had a coupon). Less than 24 hrs later my “Service Engine Soon” light came on.

This is the first time the light came on EVER. So naturally I took my baby back to the dealership. They ran a driver diagnosis and the code was P0442 - Evap small leak. The mechanic advised me, no leaks and the ECM needs reprogramming ($199.99). Ironic how the light came on hours after the inspection. Anyone ever experienced this before? ..So frustrated right now.

call it coincidence, unless its a really bad dealership and/or state insp, most inspectors aren't gonna risk their inspection license(and possible jailtime) to mess with the car... plus theres no way(to my knowledge) to cause the light to come on without physically causing the issue... so if there is no leaks and its setting the code its probably just bad timing... only other option would be to take it to another shop to have it diagnosed and see if they also say theres no code... if in fact your computer is bad rest assured theres a 99 percent chance that they didnt do anything to it

The most common cause of P0442 is a loose or missing gas cap. Check your cap for obvious leaks. Once you make sure it's tight, you may have to drive for several days before the code clears. It take a couple of complete driving cycles to clear most codes. If you have a code scanner you cn clear the code electronically.
