I have been using Optimax ever since i got my car (2000km now), but the local pump has been running out. I have in my area both BP ultimate and Vortex98, so i was wandering do you know which brand does Nissan recomend, and which do you use and recomend. Also ive heard lots of tales about "not mixing " the brands as it can screw up ECU, though i find it hard to belive.

So would it be OK for me to use Ultimate or Vortex now and again, or would you recomend any of them over optimax???

I always use Ultimate or Synergy 8000. I rarely use Optimax but sometimes i do once in a while thanks to the Coles discount fuel thing :p

Btw every state has a different 98 ron quality because it came from different refinery. So i think Ultimate and Synergy 8000 is the best in Victoria. i'm not sure what about yours.

PS: i never knew there is Vortex98 because in Victoria is only Vortex95.

I have used both BP Ultimate & Optimax, have not used vortex 98 yet as it is so new.
I have found that optimax gives me better fuel mileage (but could be a figment of my imagination) as my car was fairly new when I was comparing.
No problems in mixing the fuels (even mixing 98 & 95 RON if you have to). Nissan says 98 octane in 2004 manuals.

My preference is 1. Mobil Synergy 8000 (where ever possible) 2. Shell Optimax (if Mobil not available) 3. BP Ultimate ( if all other option are not available), most dyno tunning shops I have spoken to have the same option.

In WA the only 98 available is BP Ultimate!!!!

Mine's a company car and we use Mobil so i'm stuck at the moment with their 95 PULP. Company will be changing me to Caltex when 98 Vortex get's here in March this year.

I've done 26,500km on 95 without any problems

I, wherever possible, use Synergy 8000.

We have talked about this many times and there has always been a fair use of all brands. Don't know about the Caltex one as it is still new.

We have always come to the conclusion that you find a petrol station you know are going to give you good fuel and stick to them. The reason for this is that over the years I ( and many others) have bought petrol from unusual places and ended up with troubles.

As always

I agree with Harry, I've a shell petrol station near by and I get my fuel there, Optimax. Once I got BP Ultimate and I had detonation. For now I'm sticking with Optimax. Also my 2003 manual says that I should use 95RON it's on the last page I think.

Dragged up this old thread while searching for another item.

Just wanted to let you know that a mate of mine who owns an 05WRX, had Caltex 98 recommended as the best fuel from MRT Performance (where he got his exhaust / ECUTEK tune). Brett Middleton (MRT) reckons that the Caltex fuel results in more power at the wheels than any other brand of 98 RON fuel, at least on WRX's.

optimax and mobil 8000 for me.... and I do notice that with 8000, the engine is smoother/quieter... but somehow feel more power with optimax though...

cheers,

Even if I didn't have a fuel card, I'd still be running BP Ultimate.

I've never liked Mobil fuels (I found their 95RON to not be as nice as BP's or Shell's, back when that was the best) and Caltex took too long to release 98RON. I'm not a big fan of Shell either, since everyone I've known has had at least 1 "bad batch" of it, but no-one had issues with Ultimate.

Reality is that BP is the only one to date that has substantially finished upgrading their refineries to produce high quality clean fuels ... Mobil/Shell/Caltex are still playing catch up. So if you want the best quality fuel in Aus it is BP Ultimate.

BP is the only 98 ron fuel here...
Awhile back they stopped advertising it as Ultimate 98, and just ultimate cause it was only 95 ron.
im sure that was a few years ago...

Vortex is 95

and we still dont have optimax....

i used shell premium once and it was really really really crap......

i used Vortex a lot in my last car.. Magna, and it was ok...

BP is by far the best here...
