I think the answer to this question is obvious, but I'll ask anyway. When drying w/ MF towels should I lay the towel flat on the car, pat that area dry then move to the next area or can I wipe/drag the towel across the car w/o causing any harm to the cars surface?

You might go to Adam's Polishes. There are several excellent videos on that site that shows the correct way to dry your car.

I have always used MF towels to wipe the surface and have seen many others do the same. No padding is required. As a matter of fact, you should invest in a good set of waffle weave towels to dry your car. They work a lot better than MF towels. I use MF towels for waxing and spot cleaning.
