With everyone boosting and building up engines, what about the trans?. What are the limitations of the stock trans, and what can be done to strengthen it?.

I've been wondering the same thing this entire time. I know there's stuff like clutch/flywheel/pressure plate, but there isn't much out there for the Z. I know for the GTR you can buy a Holinger sequential transmission (about $16,000 USD, LOL) or OS Giken strengthened and custom ratio gear sets. Transmission coolers would help, too. That's about it I guess...

I know that someone is looking into the process of hardening the half axles.  They seem to snap pretty easily when launching really hard.

And you would know this how?

:jk:  I'm curious myself. I have read a lot of peeps' own version of strengthening their tranny's and stuff, but there's nothing definitive (unless someone saved a really good writeup somewhere). I've heard that as a daily driver, the OEM can handle the FI if you don't subject it to constant 'drag racing style' driving. I personally would look into beefing it up, only because I know my driving style.

The tranny is probably the least of everone's worries...if your car is a daily driver. The race track or constant abuse is a totally different story. I will tell you that my car running 10psi at the track...roughly 430whp, and shifting like a mad-man...I never once grinded or missed a gear. No complaints...I even have the stock clutch installed! :)

The 05 6mt trannys have been upgraded internally with better quality synchros and gears. Outside the tranny mounts have been stiffened for less shifter vibration and a more solid shifter feel.

ya know, after as many transmissions i've heard of being replaced, it sounds like it has troiuble with the stock Hp....

The gears haven't been the issue . the synchros have. Increasing power thru FI stresses the gears most. The sychros get stress by lots of quick shift and worse during improperly speed matched downshifts. So in gneral Drag racing is harder on gears and road racing is harder on synchros.

yeah...what g3pro said...

It seems like the latest and greates version of the 350Z tranny is pretty decent. I have version 8 I believe, and its been great to me! The older ones really were terrible, and would grind in almost every gear.

Thank God mine was built after the cutoff date . . . my '03 has had no problems whatsoever and continues to tear through the gears with stock parts . . . if you're general FI (less than 415whp), tranny shouldn't be the #1 mod on your list. Fuel solution and forged internals should be . . .
