question about buying a Z

HI, first post here. Im just kind of looking for some opinions / feedback on the Z cars. I currently have a deposit on a black, 05 Touring roadster but am thinking that a coupe might meet my needs better. How are these cars on the track? Warratny issue, or common problems? IS resale value good? Any advice you can offer is appreciated at this point. The killer is insureance is $1050-1100 every 6 months and I'm 32 with a (mostly) good driving record! Im basically trying to decide between a new Z and a used BMW M3.

:welcome: Glad to see you made it over here man

The roadster is more fun and much sexier with the top down. You definitely get what you pay for either way though. The insurance isn't a big deal when you're driving your baby around in the sun on the weekend :)
Bah! Forget the ZR, get the coupe. Much sexier with the teardrop shape and smooth lines.

Resale value on these cars is in top 3. As with any sports car, you'll have a few issues. However, tracking the car is well within the cars performance abilities. I think you'll like it.

Oh, and :welcome:
Definately go with the coupe. The lines are much more fluid.
Plus the hatch in the coupe is big enough for a few carry-ons and a couple cases of beer.

I figure it like this. The coupe is hit it bag of Z car world. I personally don't mind my smiling mug being seen by people. But I understand in some cases *Cough smooth Cough* why some people wouldn't. :starwars: Avoid the darkside of the Z and go with the roady. You will not be disappointed.

As a ZR owner I completely agree with Fillup - There have been a few times that I wished I would have bought a Coupe then the sun comes out & the temps start to rise & I remember WHY I got the ZR instead.

If I had to do it all over again - I'd get the ZR again :werd:

:welcome: BTW!
I knew you ZR guys would get into it. I like verts, but never owned one. Only had the t-tops on my Z32 which was awesome. I just don't like the lines of the top up on the ZR, that's all.

Thats why I practice the top protection program, you leave it under the tonneau unless absolutely neccesary.
If you mentioned track in your post, you should immediately realize the coupe is for you. Convertibles rarely make good track cars.. too much going against them. Though, I'm sure the Z-R will be fine on the track, the difference between the coupe and the vert will be apparant I believe..
Coupe. Much better looking lines IMHO.

But on those really nice days the roady would be nice.

Nahhhh, stick with the coupe. The world is not always nice and sunny but the coupe looks badass in any weather :)
Its to bad these car don't come with T-tops anymore. Back in 91 I had a 300 ZX TT for about a year (Couldn't afford it to easily at 18!). It was like the best of both worlds. Now that was a sweet car! I ran it once at a dragstrip and got a 14.1 best, sounds like it was faster than the new Z's 14 years later???

And FWIW, I'm also considering the (used) BMW M3. This seems to be a more down to earth forum. It wierd to go over there and see the guys doing crazy expensive mods, full carbon fiber widebodys and talking about upgrading to TT Porsche 997's, E55 AMG's, Vipers, etc. Kind of out of my league!

But I'm curious by looking at the demographic polls here how someone with a 30-40k year income afford a $35k car?

Buy used would be my suggestion.
Got mine with 7k miles for $26k... It's not $35k unless you want a brand new track. The dealers are raping people at that price. Should be able to find a barely used car for about $24-26k...

Living with the rents? Spending their entire college trust fund and not going to school? :dunno: Sometimes I wonder about it myself.

The wife and I make somewhere in the 6 figure range and after 2 years of marriage and a new house Im just now looking at cars in the $35-40k range. I guess I didnt think of college students living at home. Hey thats a great gig, if you can get it! Your only young once so enjoy it.

Going further off topic, what do you guys think of the G35 6mt coupe compared to the Z? I see it has 298hp instead of 286hp, but costs roughly $5k more
The G is heavier and has less torque (I believe). HP is fine and dandy, but give me more torque anyday. Plus, the G has seats in the back so it's not a true coupe. Don't get me wrong, I like the G. Just got the Z instead.
I love the G. If I couldn't have my Z, I would trade it for a G anyday. It's definitely my second choice.

I have a friend with a G with a couple of bolt ons and another that had a Vortec supercharger. They're just as much fun as the Z, so don't let anybody tell you differently. It's also a softer, quieter ride with a whole lot more luxery interior, especially the comfy leather seats.

If the G was in my price range when I was shopping, I may have ended up with one.

Yes, in some circles...perhaps I should have said sportscoupe. Then again, why do they have the moniker 'sports sedan?' Oxymoron? :dunno:
