:OMG: that's expensive. Stupid question: What's 'forged' all about?

it says they are forged:

Eye-catching 5-spoke styling
Anodized polished lip and a fully machined center
2-piece modular construction
Forged and roll-formed rim section for superior strength
Performance perfection from the streets of Japan

Thanks for the info.

Next question: How is the construction of the wheel different between forged and cast?

Forged is lighter!

When parts are forged the aluminum is forced into its mold at high pressure and heat. This produces a wheel 300 times stronger than cast. Because it is so much stronger, less aluminum can be used. It is more expensive and more difficult to produce so higher prices can be expected. The rim in the picture looks like a two piece forged wheel, the center is forged as one piece and the outer rim is spun or stamped and welded to the center. One last benefit of forged is the denser aluminum can be brought to a brighter polish.

Cast rims are made by pouring aluminum into a mold, some are pressurized or use vacuum to help remove voids and add some strength but nothing compared ot forged. These have a much lower cost to produce and why most OEMs use this type are their "upgrade" wheels.
