Are you guys feeling performance differences from your skirts/lips/wings? I'm just wondering, because I love the smooth look of the Z without them, but I would be interested if it was more than aesthetics. Do you feel differences driving around town, or just out at high sustained speeds?

Also, where did you all start as far as mods? I guess I was thinking intake and exhaust first.

And finally.....(drumroll).....After which modification did you first get in the drivers seat, hit the gas and think "Holy ****, I have a monter on my hands"

Thanks folks.

well for starters.. you will not get a monster from this car without using a supercharger, turbos, or NOS. N/A mods do not help very much with this car.. You can do intake/exhaust/cams/headers, and still onlly get about 25 extra horses.

With intake and exhaust you will be changing the sound alot, but expect no more than 10-15hp from the combination.

Mods really depend on what you want to do with the car.. If you want a monster, i say save for forced induction.

First, welcome to the forum.
Second, nice color choice!

As for mods, mine is awaiting several which should be arriving this week. I've got a JWT pop charger in my garage, Helix test pipes enroute, an aluminum airguide at UPS here, blue wire grounding kit also in my garage, and the CWest front lip replica also enroute. I'm waiting till I have it all before installing them.

I will definitely take pics and post along with my own testimonial.

Toykilla:
Thanks for the advise. only 25 horse?! Kind of a bummer for all it takes financially. I like the idea of forced induction.....from what I've seen it's gonna run around $5000 just for the components? My main motivation to modify is just to know that I'm running more than the average Z that pulls up next to me. As awesome as it is, I just want it to not be stock. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.

SmoothZ:
***********! Arctic white that is.....just kidding. I wish you the best with all your mods. Your car is a beauty of course. I'll be interested to see it when you're done as it will give me a good idea about what mine could be.......

The white is so beautiful. You see it from a distance and think "It's pretty nice" then you get up on it and your eyes get a little wider and your heart sort of pounds and you get a little lump in your throat.
And you find yourself just looking without much to say......zen. I love it.

The thing I like about the silver though is the orange leather seats...awesome. Ever seen those in a white Z? It would probably be a little goofy.

A friend of mine has a White 1993 300ZX Twin Turbo. She got it in the divorce, lucky girl. I'm trying to get her to bring it out cruising with mine some night, but it's un-insured and just sitting in her garage. Actually, it might be for the best as she would probably blow my doors off with that thing, and my manhood would be threatened. She's saving it for her son to drive when he's old enough (which is about 12 years!)

welcome yo.. i have a "z" and its completely stock.. i had my days of adding all that ****.. and after a few mouths something goes wrong and ur back to the start lol.. if u have the $$ and time go for it, in my opinion the car looks, drives amazing. like what toykilla said about the intake and exhaust is basically all u need to make ur self drool over it some more. unless u have high dreams stick with the stock ****.

As toykilla said the only way you'll really notice a big difference is with NOS, SC, or turbo. I put a JWT popcharger and a Borla TD exhaust on mine. I'm probably going to get a crank pulley next then a plenum after all of the problems with them are straightened out. Lastly hi flo cats. With just the exhaust and the popcharger I really didn't notice a change and probably won't notice to much with the others according to others timeslips. After my warranty is up I'll be going with probably NOS because its the cheapest of the three and you get almost the same perf.

I would suggest for a notice in power difference is changing your cats, plenum, pulley, and get a popcharger (intake). Look to spend about $1200 or so on these.

I'm telling you guys, when I get those white tires, and white tint on my glass you are are gonna join the light side!

Dave:
Thanks for the tips. I'll still add my mods, but I was getting bummed at the prospect of feeling no power gains from them.

I consider wings, side skirts, etc. to be useless cosmetic mods and therefore, I will not spend a nickel on them. I agree with an earlier post that the best way to make a lot of power to the rear wheels is with F/I. For about $6,000 - $6,500 you can get the Vortech supercharger with intercooler installed. That's the best way to go unless you want to spend $9,000+ for a Greddy Twin Turbo with intercooler installed, plus gauges, boost controller, etc. (Probably a $10,000 set-up)

I wish I knew that before I went hog wild with my N/A mods. I get about 40 - 45 additional rwhp than stock including the cams and everything else except the 8 lb. flywheel. The flywheel adds as much as 30 rwhp on the way up the acceleration curve, but nothing at peak horsepower.

Good luck.

Richard:
Thanks for your input. 40-45 hp sounds pretty nice, but man, your mod-list is extensive (and expensive!). Maybe I'll repect my elders and hold out for a F/I system. But probably not. I think I'll be passing up the wings and skirts though. I sort thought they were just cosmetic, but was never sure.

Richard, if you had gone FI, then you wouldn't be able to track your car reliably, especially at the desert tracks. Unless you just want to do 15 minute sessions, which is pretty lame if you ask me.
