I got to thinking, someone who I don't know started the idea that there would be 1500 units per year, and I don't know if the post came from FA and spread, but I started thinking, considering this is a high end sports car with a hefty price tag, do you think that 1500 per year is too much or too little? Also, is it 1500 for the U.S. or 1500 worldwide per year? I hope the sales do not suffer when it's released, as there are plenty of cars already established for similar prices that have a more luxurious brand name, God forbid it depreciate as quickly as the NSX did. Hopefully the huge fanbase the GT-R has worldwide will lead to more demand.

my short answer is 8k+ units/yr in the US market @ msrp=$55k


yeah im not sure who created the 1500 quote. maybe somehow we did over all of years of talking about it and it just became like a "known" thing


my guess would be 3500-5K (first year) with $70K (i still think any thing less is wishful thinking)

Nissan's Senior VP of Design - Shiro Nakamura - We don’t want to make it too expensive. The previous GT-R I think was about $60,000, but the previous generation’s interior quality was not as high when you compare to the performance side. And the new GT-R will have higher level of performance. Anyways, I think it will have a “good price”. Not as low as the previous GT-R, but not as high as $100,000. I think it will be a bargain compared with other European competitors. It will have outstanding performance, design, and quality

I think the first 3 years, it'll sell pretty good, then it'll cool down. The NSX sold about 18k units in the last 15 years, so maybe about a 1000 a year on average..
GT-R will not even be close to 55k.. that's just wishful thinking, right there.

$55k (or $60k) is far from wishful thinking.

The last GT-R - the R34 GT-R V-Spec II Nur did not sell for $60k.

This car carried an MSRP of 6129000JPY. The quick division way (divide by 100) leads you to believe the car cost $60k, but this is wrong. You can't use today's exchange rate to figure out the value of something in Japan several years ago. Back when the R34 was around, from 99-02, the JPY-USD exch rate carried an average of 120:1. At the time of the R34 V-Spec II Nur, the exchange rate was over 130:1.
Adjusted for the exchange rate at the time, the last GT-R actually cost a little more than $47,100 USD when it came out.

This was a car that used a relatively unique platform and engine. They currently produce over 3 times as many copies of the expected new GT-R platform/engine. So while the new GT-R will be more advanced, it will benefit from more parts sharing. A $55k base price is very possible.

I remember that '1500' number for some reason. It was recent. However, I can't imagine them only making that few with all the hoopla and mystery surrounding the car. With all the money they've spent on it, they have to sell more than that to even begin to make some kind of profit. I'm not going to guess how many...

I heard the 1500 from a delaer as well and I believe there are around 1200 dealers in the country so that first batch will be tough to get one.

As for list price it is meaningless at first as I am already hearing 20k markup.

The 1500 is probably for the first year similar to how they only sent 10k 350Z's in the first year and then went to 30k

The R34 sold around 12k units in total from 1999-2002. And the last GT-R in Japan, the NUR's fetched at least a price tag of over $100,000, as they were the last of the breed and most were pre-ordered. Only 1000 units made of those. So if that was for the NUR, I imagine that for the new Nissan GT-R 1500 units a year a 70-80k price range seems just in the ballpark, but I can sorta see a 90k price figure in there too.

as far as production #'s go isnt it logical to think that the the lower the price the higher the #

meaning a 60K GT-R would see more units than a 70-75K car?


basically 1500 cars a 55K seems like a tease. where that # makes a little more sense at 20K more.


55-60K to me is still on the upper range of a mass produced car.

I remember the 1500 number as well, but it was only the number of cars allocated to the US. Who knows how many other countries would get.

As a point of reference, GM is only making a total of ~7k C6 Z06s and sells them in Europe as well.

Considering that the 2002 NUR's fetched 65k+ used with low miles (~1500) in 2004-2005 gives you an idea of what it must have sold for when they were at the dealers. If you don't think so, go to zele-international.com. They used to be Prospec-MS, but Shin changed it and got affiliated with Nismo. I used to see the stock lists all the time, and the used NUR's he had posted had anywhere from 1500 to 11,000 miles and fetched on average 60k U.S. dollars after the price conversion.

Chuck_H, your right with what you said. From 1999-2001, they sold 9,000. So 3,000 for 2002 seems right. I was referring to GT-R's, thanks for the correction.

i can't argue about the street value of the car as I was not there, but nissan japan's docs seem to suggest the msrp was a lot lower than 90k. see this for example

Considering there's alot more skylines(non gtr), must make a total of over 100k skylines in total including the GT-R's. Most likely there are more non GT-R than GT-R's.

Following your logic there should be well over 140k skylines in total, which I don't think will be the case for the GTR. I think the number of units will depend heavily on the price (duh). If we see around a $70k price tag then I'd expect something around 1200 cars the first year to reach the US.
