What is the best way to get to the fuel pump? The level is acting up because even when I fill up the tank it goes only to 3/4 full mark...:helpsmilie:

Mine too. I read something recently that said that it isn't a problem with anything in the tank. Supposedly, the problem is actually caused by a sensor on the evap canister assembly. Other people say that it's something related to the sending unit... :dunno:

Anyway, to answer your question, the fuel pump is behind the passenger seat (IIRC) underneath of the "glove box" that's back there. You have to remove the interior plastics back there to get to it. Download the service manual from the Wiki on this site. There is a detailed procedure in there I am sure.

When you figure it out, be sure to report back. If it is something simple like the evap canister, I may fix it. If it requires pulling the fuel pump assembly, I'll just deal with it.

If the gauge is still accurate and let's you know how much gas you have or when your running low, even if it doesn't fill up completely, the gauge still acts like it's functioning properly.

Maybe the gas station pump is stopping and not letting your fill up the tank? If so, it's going to be the check valve. The check valve is there so gasoline will not leak out form the gas tank of the car in case of an emergency and sometime they will go bad not letting you fill up the tank.

Next time you fill up, check how many gallons are going into the car. I believe our car holds around 18-20 gallons.

This is a common problem in the Z. The tank has a 20 gallon capacity. Even if you think you're empty, you still have a reserve of 2-3 gallons so you'll never really put in 20 gallons from the pump.

Your fuel gauge may be accurate and the problem could be that the gas station pump shuts off early. Nissan has issued 2 Service Bulletins relating to the fuel tank not completely filling. They are:

NTB05-048, Fuel Tank Difficult to Fill at Times (2003-2005 350Z)

NTB08-082, Hard to Fill Fuel Tank (2003-2008 350Z)

Each bulletin directs that a different part in the tank be replaced. Bulletins are available at the Nissan Help web site.

The problem could also be with the fuel level sensor. There are 2 sensors, one on each side of the tank. The one on the passenger side is part of the fuel pump assembly.

Thanks guys!

Ok that is alot of info! I dont know where to start, I guess the cheapest solution is always the most practical. I do know this though that I have pushed the filling to where fuel overflowed from the fill neck, LOL! I knew that that the stations had the safety of the Check Valve. When I first bought the car(used) in Jan of 08, it functioned properly. The gauge needle worked well, but than it stopped reading above the 3/4 fill mark :( I not going to tear out the pump just yet. As an old Carpenter saying, "Measure twice, cut once." I will look into the service bulletins. Thanks guys for taking the time to help and once I figure it out Ill be sure to explain.

I think this might be the most probable explanation because even though it reads only 3/4 full even on a total fill up just recently I observed that the fuel gauge was fluctuating at a range of a 1/4 threshold.

I've never had a problem with the fuel gauge after parking it for up to 5 months at a time. I think cleaning the sensors MAY help. It wouldn't hurt.
