I recently picked up a 350z and was wondering, if I wanted to build up an engine then swap it, what the best engine and how much it would cost to swap. I was looking at vq35hr and one of my buddys said a vr30 from a q60 would be a good option. My goal power to make over a span of years is 800whp.

Engine swaps are more complex and expensive than you can imagine. Something like the VQ35HR would require almost the entire front clip, including main wiring harness, ECM, steering rack and ancillary parts. You'd also be faced with sensors and connections that don't exist in an older DE-powered Z33. The VR30DTT would be stupid expensive and highly complex to swap, but to the layman, seems "easy".

Best way to look for even 600 HP is to consider a LT1/3 swap, as that can be accomplished for between $7-10K, depending on whether you have the tools, garage and mechanical skills to accomplish the swap yourself.

Don't swap, get a new engine
