this is a rather unusual problem i have noticed only recently, compared to reading about numurous issues about transmission problems with the zeds. ive noticed about two days back, driving back from work one morning that when cycling through the gears, and with my foot firmly pressed down on the cluth pedal, shifting into 5th gear. i hear and feel an excruciating crunching noise in the shifting transition. i am baffled as to why this is happening and only happens during the first few minutes of driving. has anyone encountered a similar problem and if so, can anyone provide any help or advice? im afraid this might confirm my worst fears of possibly having to replace my tranny. this is not a good sign.

cheers

It's happeneing only for the 1st couple of minutes probably because your transmision oil is not up to temperature. Once the oil is to operating temperature I'm guessing that the gear-box is fine. Also I bet that it's happening only now when it's really cold and more than likely only in the morning (as the car has been parked over night).

Nissan might be able to fix it with just replacing your transmition oil, but if what I'm saying is correct then meanwhile you can probably drive around it by not shifting into 5th gear until your tranny oil is up to temperature. Either way, I'd mention it to your dealer.

I agree with David, your gearbox is fine. When cold in the morning, my gearbox is notchy as sh*t, but after 5 mins on the road, all is smooth again. I had a similar issue in my ITR and changing to a good tranny oil (from memory it was some GM fluid that I had to order from US) that did wonders for the gearbox! Pete might give a better suggestion for the Z tho? :)

well dave and iggys advice seems to offer a little reassurance. i just hope i dont have to end up replacing the gearbox. that would be my worst nightmare i reckon. i was driving back from work again this morning after a thorough warming up and i still ended up getting that crunch in 5th. machapman, how long did it take for nissan to make the repairs/replacement to your transmission. and did you have to go through any hassles with the warranty, etc....

cheers

Just dont go to Ryde Nissan if your in Sydney.

If there is any crunching into fifth when warm it needs to be replaced. As long as you can reproduce the issue you shouldnt have any problems, it isnt the first gearbox to go so there should be any issue. I cant remember how long it took them but make it extremely clear you want as little downtime as possible. I cant remember how long it took, they want to get a specialist in to check it which took time but hopefully they wont do that to you.

Yeah, if it's still crunching when warm then I'd get Nissan to look at it. They could still fix it just by flushing your transmision oil, but you won't know until they do it.

I had my box changed recently, but only after they tried to rebuild it first. That took two days. The problem wasn't solved so Nissan agreed to change the box. I could have had the car back, but they kept it. Box took a couple of days to freight from Melbourne. Gearbox was installed in a day.

Really no hassle.
