I made an excel spreadsheet to document everything. There are categories such as Modifications, Gas, Payments, Tickets/Legal, etc.. everytime I buy wax, change oil, pay a ticket, or decide on a part I want, it gets documented. The list under modifications with "$0" in the total spent block is very long lol. But it's good to put down what I plan to get and once I get it I fill in that block and color that row as "complete". There's a grand total block that adds up the totals of every category showing exactly how much I've spent on the car since I bought it.

ONE OF THE FIRST RULES IN MODIFYING; Do NOT keep comprehensive records and tally the exact total cost, write offs, R&D costs, and change of mind expenses. It will deprive you of the utter thrill and enjoyment that modifying itself, brings to your life. Keeping a ledger of costs and outgoings is similar to a herion addict kleeping his "chemical costs" in a folder for reflection on the sanity of engaging in the art of snorting, shooting, freebasing, injecting, procuring, stealing, lying, cheating, dole bludging, free dressing, and all but feeding himself. (Don't think for a moment that the hapless herion addict comparison hasn't been used before, especially when you can confidently say "At least my habbit is cheaper and I have something to sell swap trade, at the end of it. Not to mention my healthy body!") :rolf2: If you are modifying, keep this in mind, "annorexia is your friend" it is such a waste of good money to feed yourself as well as modify. Sleep is such a waste of time. NOTHING beats swapping gearboxes in the gutter between finish of work and start the next day. There is a good 14 hours there that can do the job and a pizza shared between friends is the definition of "blissful bonding of the Hunters" or conversly "information sharing" whilst the girlfriend spends yet another lonely night tossing all on her own. (lets face it, she would much rather toss with you my friend, at least in the early days. Its later that she prefers solo) In the morning, she can wonder at your stamina and dig deep into her savings to prop up your habbit, or at least fill the tank with fuel......... sheeesh! (what is it with you?) Stockfor2Years, your out of step. If you keep records you can be called on to appease the guilt fairy and justify everything you have spent, rather than respond with the usual blanket response "I dunno what it cost, $20.00 or something like that, I forget. I know it definitely was cheap at that price though!" Anyhow darlin' look at that, isn't she noice with her (substitute latest accessory) fitted, not even Wayne's got onea them.
BE ASDVISED; You will loose at the end of the journey and it will prevent the wailing a gnashing of teeth, when you do not fully know the extent of your losses.
Believe me I've been there/am there, but at 50+ I recon I am going to learn not to do this :rolf2: (or have the quickest damned walker, probably with 2 bells in the retirement villiage)
Cheers.

I'm noob Z guy here so im still trying to learn how to get around my car's parts.

I noticed that some of you guys included oil coolers and steering wheel oil coolers as part of their upgrades?

Dont they come with the vehicle?

The reason I'm asking this is that im using the Gulf Specs and i'm not really sure what makes it different from the market in the other areas.

Given how much money I've spent on my car, people ask me if there's an end to it and if I'll ever be happy. The other car enthusiasts always say, "The car is never finished" with a smile and a wink.

I gave it some thought, and for me that's not true. I've come up with "stages" of completeness. Basically, if the car reaches that "stage" I'll be happy with leaving it as it is, but if I modify further I'd have to finish the next stage before I consider the car "finished" again.

So, here are my stages of completeness for my '03 350Z Touring (N.B. it doesn't cover the replacement of consumables, since those things have to get replaced anyway. Only replacing parts in working order):

Stage 1:

Full exhaust (extractors, cat, mufflers)
Pod filter + cold air induction
Piggyback / Aftermarket ECU
Coilovers + swaybars
Lightweight Wheels
Short shifter
Lightweight flywheel
Plenum spacer
Brembo Brakes w/ braided lines & master cylinder stopper
A/V head unit and replacement speakers / amps for factory locations
Power Steering Cooler
Oil cooler
Extractors
High Flow Cats

Stage 2a:

Medium cam upgrade (not quite racecar big, but bigger than "mild")
1.5 Way LSD
221kW intake plenum / modified stock plenum

Stage 2b:

Mild cam upgrade
APS Twin Turbo kit with custom tune
EBC
1.5 Way LSD
Uprated clutch
Oil cooler
Uprated / lightweight radiator

Stage 3:

Ings+1 N-spec bodykit
Defi gauges
Badges etc

There's an a and b path, depending on if I keep the car NA and keep the grip/power ratio on the positive, or go all out and get twin turbos....which may lead to an unforeseen brake / wheel upgrade.

Also, if I pop the bottom end I'll get it rebuilt properly, but since its a repair and not a replacement of a working product I don't consider it in my staging. None of my mods technically require a bottom end rebuild, since APS' TT kit seems to be holding up well and even with the EBC and cam I'm not after that much more power.

As you can see, I'm almost at Stage 1 Complete. Once I get there, I'll have to decide if I suck it in and go to Stage 2 or leave the car at a mild upgrade but not that much more stressed than stock.

So, do other people have a modification roadmap?
Where do you run what is your 1/4 mile times ? How big is your stereo I bet you've got soft hands.

Good Post.
I am an old fart so i guess I'm a little different to mainstream.
1. day one. Ordered the rays.
2. Ordered the Michelins
3. Did some intensive searching and this site is (THE BEST) ordered the Strosek body kit (actually very nice people to deal with).
4. about week 4. Ordered the APS,
5. Next day ordered the clutch.
6. About week 10 and lots of price hunting, ordered the JUN kit.
7. Next day, ordered the TEIN's.
8. Unsure about the total yellow look with the spoiler and flippers and splitter so ordered carbon bits for those. If they look ricey, then they are up for grabs. The flippers and spoiler will sell within minutes I feel.
9. I have to order the discs yet still looking.
My niece is a graphic designer and I have just commissioned her to design an identifying badge. i like STROSEK, and WALD , so something similar but...............dunno, TTR or TT_R over limited edition????????( to fit the nissan advertising _ theme) or just a couple of simple _TT after the 350Z badge. I intend to strip the nissan logo off the back but I believe there are two little impressions underneath, so that will be disappointing. Feel free to add your bits here folks.............re badging.
All mods will be done in a very short two weeks mid June, (I hope) and are sitting in a warehouse, with the JUN stuff arriving June 10.
Its rushed, but having modded for a lot of years, I have never walked into a kitted car when its still very new, so thats the motivation for me now. When youth is on your side, i recommend taking years to do your car, as it adds little pleasures along the way and pleasant interludes to what can be a mundane lifestyle when your locked into a 9-5.
Its not a daily driver, but should be fun once finished.
1. 1st disappointment would have to be the paint job so were off to a flying start. (a crowd in brisbane will sort this as they are full time into Porche ,BMW ,Mercedes repair people so a good quality colour match should be simple for them. Panel beaters out here are renound for their family trees being a straight line. That theory has been proven yet again I'm afraid.
Thats about it...............oh working on replacing the lower spring carriers (arm) on the rear and making that trailing arm adjustable for full rear end adjustment, (camber and toe). I have four scales on the workshop floor so that when we adjust the Teins, we park each wheel on a scale, and we are able to measure the force on each wheel (and adjust) to arrive at a balanced suspension package. (something we used to do when on the circuit before).
Whoops, I guess an LSD would make this a more interesting drive, so I'll be looking at that very soon.
You bought strosec stuff...you got burned. I made the wing for 200 bux strosec charges 2000 bux for crap :rolf2:

Where do you run what is your 1/4 mile times ? How big is your stereo I bet you've got soft hands.
I run my quarter mile times at WSID, if I ever feel the need to turn my brain off and not go around corners. I haven't been out in years, but the last time I ran it was a 14 flat.

My stereo is stock, but I'm putting in a new head unit soon as my CD player has given up the ghost.

Don't come on here just to **** stir.

Nice Plans Guys. For me the first thing I'm going to do is wait. 6 YEARS lol. Then I will be out of university, have a job, and another car to drive while my Z project starts. The first step will to be find a Le mans Sunset, 350z from 2003-2006 with whatever trim level happens to come along with traction control, and stability manager.

Then I will give the car a nice interior comb through. And by that I basically mean near-complete dis assembly. This will give me the change to move any excess weight and unwanted features. Then I will refer back to the rather large parts list I have made up, and rebuild my interior. I will remove a lot of the plastic to replace or cover it with black alcantara cloth. For instance the A B and C pillars (If they don't cover and wires will be frame wrapped rather than covered with plastic body pieces.) I'll have to learn how to do that first or take the car to an interior shop obviously.

Then I will rebuild the interior with the new parts I have ordered, and drive the car for a while to figure out what performance modifications to do. While I am getting used to the car I will start on my exterior mod list and by the time that is finished I will have a better understanding of what I want to do to the cars performance.

Aust350z's thread inspired me to revisit this one. After 3 years, it would be good to see where I am compared to where I was when I posted it.

Compared to where I am, I am practically at Stage 1 complete. My current mods list:

QUOTE (scathing @ May 15 2006, 11:07 AM) index.php?act=findpost&pid=248072
Stage 1:

Full exhaust (extractors, cat, mufflers)
Pod filter + cold air induction
Piggyback / Aftermarket ECU
Coilovers + swaybars
Lightweight Wheels
Short shifter
Lightweight flywheel
Plenum spacer
Brembo Brakes w/ braided lines & master cylinder stopper
A/V head unit and replacement speakers / amps for factory locations
Power Steering Cooler
Oil cooler
Extractors
High Flow Cats

Stage 2a:

Medium cam upgrade (not quite racecar big, but bigger than "mild")
1.5 Way LSD
221kW intake plenum / modified stock plenum

Stage 2b:

Mild cam upgrade
APS Twin Turbo kit with custom tune
EBC
1.5 Way LSD
Uprated clutch
Oil cooler
Uprated / lightweight radiator

Stage 3:

Ings+1 N-spec bodykit
Defi gauges
Badges etc
Full Exhaust (extractors to tips)
Pod Filter + CAI
Piggyback ECU
Coilovers + swaybars
Lightweight Wheels
Lightweight flywheel and upgraded clutch
Plenum Spacer
Motordyne MREV2 lower plenum
Brembo Brakes w/ braided lines
A/V head unit with stock speakers/amps
2 Way LSD with 3.9 FD
Carbon skirt kit
badges etc
Front & Rear camber arms
GReddy Intelligent Informeter & GTech
Carbon interior trim

....wow.

I always figured I'd never "rice up" my car with a bodykit before it made big power. But, I did. Still, I did get the kit at a good price from Z350Lover so it wasn't the massive outlay that a full JDM bar cover replacement (like the Ings or Amuse kits I really like) would have been.

Future plans:

1. Fix the annoying fucking hole in my exhaust
2. Oil cooler
3. Water and oil temp gauges (probably a Defi Link Monitor, at this rate, with the Informeter jettisoned) and a AFR gauge

My motor has got quite a few kilometres on it, so I'm saving up for an inevitable rebuild. When that happens, we're going forgies with an 8000RPM redline kthx. That will require me to replace the ECU, as I'll need something that will let me rev up there.

My turbo plans are basically shelved unless I win the lottery, or a previously unknown millionaire relative leaves me a fat inheritance. I've got to save up for a home, and so the only things left to do are for maintenance / preservation since I don't intend on completely giving up track work.

Oh, and I also need new semi slicks. :)

Which Federal tyres are R-Compound? I can only find S-Compound tyres advertised on their site.

The intended purpose of my car has changed over the 2 or so years I've owned it...initially meant to replace my ridiculously modified S15, the Zed set out to be a comfortable daily, with focus on something quiet, easy to maintain, reliable and comfortable. This was reflected in my first mod, being an Alpine D103e video head-unit. Then I got out on the track and the car was predictable and really easy to drive relative to my skill level and my previous experiences with my S15.

Stage 1 - completed circa 2008
Alpine D103e head unit
Fujitsubo exhaust (Y-back)
Trust/Greddy Coilovers
Cusco Camber arms
Stock 17-inch rims with RE55's
Whiteline adjustable swaybars
Project Mu HC+ front brake pads

After that there were pretty much no modifications for about 9 months, instead money was spent on improving my skills to keep up with the car, with about 8 track days and a driver training, some time riding shotgun with some other nutter Zed drivers helped too. Doing as much of the spanner work as possible also helped a bit, but more for my own familiarisation than anything...

Now the idea of the Zed being a daily has been replaced with the Zed slowly being converted into a full-time track car with occasional daily duties. Current modifications (09/09)

Engine, exhaust and driveline
Heat shielded Apex'i Power Intake
Pure engineering plenum spacer
GReddy cooling panel
Tomei extractors
Fujitsubo Y-back exhaust
X-Force high-flow-cats and custom Y-pipe
Nismo high pressure radiator cap
Justjap oil-cooler kit
Haltech Interceptor running fuel trim map only
Exedy cushioned button clutch and lightweight flywheel
Ingalls Engine Damper with JJR mounting kit
Nismo Oil Cap

160 rwkw (new engine)

Suspension and handling
GReddy coilovers
Whiteline sway bars
Cusco camber arms
Nismo braided brake and clutch lines
Project Mu HC+ front pads
Project Mu HC+ rear pads
DBA 5000 floating slotted discs
ATS / Carbonetic 1.5-way LSD
Coner weighted by Centreline Suspension

Interior
Alpine D103e head unit
Defi engine oil temp guage
Bride Gias Sport driver's seat

Exterior
Topstage carbon modified Veilside version 1 front lip
Topstage carbon cannards
Topstage carbon modified side skirts
Chargespeed carbon rear-pods
Nismo carbon pillar garnish
Mini Antenna Thing

Wheels & Tyres
Volk Racing GT-C 19x8.5 +14 front, 19x10.5 +24 rear
Kuhmo KU31 235/35/19 Front, 275/30/19 rear

Rays Gram-Lights 57-Maximum 17x9 +22
Advan A050 255/40/17 all-round

Future
More power without sacrificing throttle response. The cheapest and most likely route will be a supercharger. I'm currently looking at the Vortech V3 due to the choice in multiple sized compressor wheels. My aim will be for a modest increase in power that will need to cope with the average track day, that is sustained high RPM for about 15 - 20 minute sessions, so a larger radiator will also be on the cards. But my commitment to myself is no big power mods until I am satisfied that I cannot possibly go much faster at the track on my own, right now there's AT LEAST 4 seconds in the car at my local track... So no more PB's = time to look at more power mods.

I'd go out on a limb and say he's referring to 595RS-R's..
Yep thems the ones....

I would however like to say that im using my z as a stepping stone to something European. Audi R8, Porsche GT3 or possibly something from Italy. Recently passed up a good deal on a 360 because 1. I didn't want to tie up my capital while the stock market is moving up and 2 I need to improve my driving before I start to push something expensive. . How many times have you seen or heard of someone stuffing their brand new 300K+ sports car. Don't have any intentions of selling the Z anytime soon. Its really growing on me. I think initially It pissed me off that I had clutch issues not covered by warranty. That and a little bit of separation anxiety when I let my TT Soarer go. But like Kam was saying its a really nice platform to learn to drive properly. Linear in progression. You can go from N/A to Mild FI then on to Hardcore FI without having to completely re learn everything. I'm already way under my budget for what I was initially going to spend for my first "proper" sports car. 80k for the car + 20k to where it is now + 25k for TT and sundry = 125K. Bargain compared to 175K for the cayman S I was going to buy a year ago. My long term goal is to complete the Targa Tasmania in whatever I buy next...
