Hey guys, I really like these rims and considering purchasing them. I am really nub when it comes to cars, so I just have a few small questions:

1. Where I can get these from and for how much??
2. What size should I go for?? I was think 20".
3. I heard there is some issues up here in QLD and offsets of the wheels.. I dunno what offset means when it comes to wheels, but will i be able to install these wheels legally in QLD??
4. I notice, people buy a wider rim for the rear and a slightly narrower rim for the front, any reason for this??
5. Should I go for the lighter or darker rim to go with my paint colour??

Thanks guys I appreciate it!!

I live in Qld and did a fair bit of research on the rules governing rim and tyre sizes before changing my wheels. In essence:

- You can increase track by up to 26mm for both front and back. This means that you can reduce offset by 13mm per rim. Standard offset for Touring or Track varies between +30 and +33 so you can take 13mm off these. Whatever, offset of most popular/quality rims (Volk, Buddy Club etc) tend to come in low to mid 20s which are, therefor, legal. I run F8.5X19" and R9.5X19" rims both with +22 offset which are legal in Qld and I have no problems with rubbing on brakes or guards (tyres F 245, R 275).

- You cannot increase offset by even 1mm (ie reduce track). In any case, it tucks the wheels inside the guards and does not look good.

- There are no restrictions on rim diameter whatsoever. The only control is that outside diameter of the tyre cannot vary by more than 15mm from standard. The tyre sizes that I use fall within this requirement. I havn't done the numbers for 20" wheels, but you would probably need to go to 30 profile tyres and be prepared to replace your rims on a fairly regular basis!!!

- Maximum increase in tyre tread is 1.3 times standard. In other words you can put tyres of up to 318.5 on the rear, but try getting those under the guards!

- Qld regs dictate that you can use only certain tyre sizes for certain rim widths. The spread in the range is fairly generous and should not present a problem either way.

The QLD Transport website is not the most friendly to use, but this info is there if you really want to fine tune what you are doing.

Congrats on choosing a great fun car and good luck with your rims.

That's the height of misguided arrogance.

If I was to buy a set of wheels and they said that, I'd measure it up and post it on every forum on the Internet just to make sure everyone else could find them.
This is one of the problems with the internet, how do companies protect their R & D!
Companies do have the right to protect what they see as there intellectual property.
Why should they give out this info on a whim?
They did indicate in their response that he would get the offsets later and he could easily get pictures sent to him (as you said).
It is a pity that information such as this is not freely available anymore, but there is a reason and one is to protect people doing as you so suggested.

Also, thanks Coatsie for posting the right advice, if that doesn't help then who knows what will.

cheers

i had the same problem when buying rims too

when i was looking at the 20" GTCs, i posted a thread on my350 and was told to ask one of the forum sponsors. There was no way i would have bought rims from the US, but he assured me he knew what offsets would work. 5 pms back and worth and he just wouldnt tell me - i understand what micky is saying, i prob would do the same to protect sales and cross shopping, still suprising to see that it happens

also, he seemed to quote the same price for 19" and 20" wheels - is that accurate?

I don't know if offsets count as intellectual property. If they don't want to tell me how the rims are constructed because they're worried about people copying that R&D, fair enough. But not publishing dimensions?!?!?

It'd be like a car stereo company not publishing the size of speakers they sell, just reassurances that it will fit. So you've got no idea if you're buying 6x9's, or 6x8's....but hey, they should fit on your parcel shelf.

Martz,

Those are great prices! I was expecting them to cost more. I didn't realise there was a Work representative in NZ.
Hey m8, I actually found a rim place in brisbane who can sell me the 19's for $3500 installed and balanced.. $500 dollars cheaper than nz, and if I got them from NZ, I'd still need to pay extra for installation and balancing.

In the end, this place quoted me $3500 for the rims and $1500 for toyo tyres. $5000 all up.. not that much imo for great looking 19" rims.

Thanks buddy that really helps... Will look into it. I'll ask the retailer here in brisbane what the offsets are but being a retailer in brisbane one can only hope they are legal hehe.

That's the height of misguided arrogance.

If I was to buy a set of wheels and they said that, I'd measure it up and post it on every forum on the Internet just to make sure everyone else could find them.

I'd be asking them for photos of the application, to make sure the rims sit right in the guard, since they won't tell you the offsets.

You don't see RAYS having a giant whinge about other people using their offsets - but then they don't publish that you can drop around 10mm from the offset and still have them sit flush on the guard.

I think I agree. I'd be stupid to buy these rims and not knowing whether they will fit or be legal in QLD... Pathetic really. Offsets is a big thing when it comes to your rim being legal or not. What if purchased the rims, $4000 dollars later they arrive in brisbane to only find out they are illegal.. then I would have to fork out more money to send the rims back.. meh no thanks..

I found a retailer here anyway.

The problem with stock rims is that the dealers want a shitload for them (typical OEM markup) and the market won't pay anything for them at all (since they're stockers).

The only exception are GT-R rims, since they tend to be forged and lightweight, but for cast rims you'll not get that much.

If you got $1000 for them on anything but brand-new rubber, I'd be surprised.

Yeah no worries...

I just spoke to my insurance agency and they said because I already have mags, I can change them np as long as they are legal. They also said that because I'm under 25 (i'm 23) I can only do 1 modification.

If you were curious my isurer is AAMI.

So in a nutshell, in QLD your offsets (350z) MUST be between +33 (stock) and +20 so that you don't decrease your track or increse your track by more than 26mm. That is for the rear. If it ain't then it is illegal regardless of whether everything fits under the guards or not.

Offsets are the most important measurement when you are about to spend money on wheels. I find it difficult to accepts any vendor who do not publish their offset data.... absolute bullshit! You would think thay discovered some secret formula... it's not rocket science.

Those wheels are beautiful! I love the "Burning Black" style. From what I've seen though, a set of 18" cost about $4k so I gave up on those lol. But maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
Set of 19's will cost me $3500 fitted.. do some more ringing around.. www.yellowpages.com.au search "wheels"

Just cars will allow you to do more then 1 mod and still be covered. So if in the future you choose to add stereo plus Exhaust etc.. You will be able to have cover.
Ahh i see, at this point in time, i'm not looking to do anything more than wheels and a pumping sound system. AAMI consider a sound system as an accessory and not a mod so np's doing it with the wheels.

Eventually I'll do some more mods.. They might happen after i'm 25 if not then I can either ask them if they will let me do the mod, or investigate just cars...

How much does insurance from just cars on a stock 350z cost per year for a youngen like me??

Don't take the retailer's word on offset as being gospel. When I was looking for wheels, most of them had no idea what the "Z"'s standard offsets were and tried to sell me some bazaar arrangements. They just wanted the sale and didn't give a sh!t about the laws. I was the one who had to point out to them that the offsets were illegal and even then it was "Oh well"!!!

I've seen a couple of local "Z"s with offsets that are clearly wrong (there's a black coupe with wheels that are tucked far inside the guards). Probably ignorant and just got suckered. You are definitely doing the right thing by being informed and cautious.

^^ What he said. ^^

Who used to own the black 350ZR that got Unichip tuned at the APS Demo Day?

No offense to him, but his rims sat a fair way into the guards, and lowering the car only exacerbated the look.
