I heard about this on the radio this morning. I bet it won't take too long for someone over here to pick up this idea...

I've always thought that people that choose to have kids should also have to pay for them. My "School Tax" is the same as my neighbor with 4 kids. I have no kids, and pay approximately $1000 a year to our local ISD. His taxes are less than mine too.

There needs to be some kind of "Flat" or "Fair Tax" enacted. I say tax 'dem babies!

Regardless of the proposed reason for a "baby tax", whether it's to fight global warming or to fund some other such foolishness, it's doomed to failure. The only thing that tax would effect is that responsible citizens (who could actually afford to pay the tax) would be discouraged from having children. The same broke-ass people who are squirting out kids by the fistful now, would still be doing it. Then when the gub'ment was like "Where's your baby tax money?" They'd pull their pockets out, turn to the camera and shrug. And of course the rest of us would have yet another burden to bare.

EDIT: Hmmm... taxes, global warming.... somehow this thread escaped from the P&R section... MOVED!

Kind of like the government bailing out people who took the risk on variable rate loans. I get stuck paying the higher rate for years on my fixed rate and now they get the best of both worlds.

Yes, I know the government's actions will probably help the overall market economics by stemming the rate of foreclosures but where's the individual accountability? They should tack on another 10 years on every one of these mortgages they salvage.

BTW, doesn't China already have a tax like this? Anyway, what's wrong with encouraging responsibility for the children you bring into this world?

A baby tax would be the least of my expenses in having two kids. Z!o: not that I feel such a tax would be fair. And just to rub it in a bit, us parents get a deduction for each kid, not a tax

The answer is simple:

We need a baby license. Just like a drivers license, if you get caught pregnant or with a kid and you don't have a license then there will be severe punishments such as mandatory abortions (even post-birth up to and including 18yr olds).

Of course the license should be difficult to get. You would have to prove psychologically stable, able to meet all the kids needs, financially able to raise the kid, etc..
