I'm assuming it was for this:

These people are not mercenaries and they are far from rookies. Blackwater is exactly what it says it is, a private security firm. It is comprised mainly of ex or retired Specialists, Seals, Rangers, Green Berets, SAS, Recon and FAST Team Marines. They don't do offensive assaults, they provide security, training, etc. for a price. If these guys opened up on someone you can bet it was for a good damn reason. I've worked with or were part of all the previously mentioned groups and their integrity and professionalism are above reproach.

I agree with everything you said except the part about them not being used for offensive strikes. I've talked to one guy who used to work for them and another who they were trying to recruit. Sometimes intelligence agencies hire these guys to do stuff the military is not legally allowed (under Geneva and/or the ROE's) to do... Things like "renditions".

Are these people mercs?
In short, yes.

Article 47 Section D through F of the Geneva Convention defines a mercenary as "Is neither a national of a Party to the conflict nor a resident of territory controlled by a Party to the conflict; Is not a member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict; and Has not been sent by a State which is not a Party to the conflict on official duty as a member of its armed forces. "

Since Blackwater USA employees foreign nationals, that are not U.S. or Iraqi citizens, with some of the contractors being from nations that are not involved in the conflict in any way... that makes them mercenaries. Regardless of what their promotional literature may say.

Since their role is one of protection, training and security, they are not in violation of any conventions. But should they be used in an offensive combat role, they would be in violation.

Now it's getting to be re-goddamned-diculous (John Wayne's voice....I know, obscure reference).

Iraqi authorities are also concerned about a sixth incident in which Blackwater guards allegedly threw frozen bottles of water at civilian cars, breaking windshields. No one was killed.
When we can't even toss a frozen bottle of water, we're being micro-managed!

I love the "throw the baby out with the bathwater" mentality that pervades most of the political threads.

You deal with the bad and keep the good... The bias is shining thru quite blindingly that there is NO WAY private contractors in Iraq can do any good there.

If they break the law then deal with it. IMO, we need them there and we need them to do their jobs right.

I agree but as the old saying goes, "Power corrupts; Absolute power corrupts absolutely". Blackwater is a necessary evil in Iraq. I'm more concerned when they take over National Guard/Red Cross duties at home. They are a militia which the Constitution protects but they are para-military. Hey, but if you're comfortable, I'm comfortable. I'm all for some hackneyed, chaw spitting, over-armed, Waco-like, overzealous, group of cop/soldier-wannabes handling security.....tuck in your gut fellas and toss water bottles at the locals.
