The guage hasnt been working for a few weeks...figured i would be ok as long as i keep track of how many miles i drive. mom decides to take it out and drive it. she resets the trip meter so i thought she filled it up (seeing as how she knows about the problem)....turns out she didnt. Found out the hard way on my way to work when i ran out of gas on the interstate.

So after being frustrated...i decide to come to you all for help. Is there a float or something in the gas tank that detects the level of fuel that i can replace to fix this problem?? Any help would be appreciated. Btw its a 97 chevy s10 5 speed.

If ignorance is bliss, why is everyone still pissed off?

Question: 1999 Chevy S10 mileage: 136,000. The fuel gauge reads full, empty, or basically, whatever it wants to. It moves very slowly during start-ups and usually registers completely opposite of what I believe it should read. What is the most likely problem? Can I free up the sending unit (float?), or should I replace it. Does the entire unit (fuel pump, filter, sending unit float) come as one piece?

Answer: The sending unit in the fuel tank is probably faulty. It is replaced with the fuel pump.
Note the answer .. but I would check with couple of auto parts places to see if you can replace just the sending unit

bump!

Even the though the thread is old, it was still able to answer my uncle's problem. Well he had encounter the same situation like daytonablue and my uncle's not quite familiar with the chevy parts so he don't know what to fix. Lucky I found this post, I'm gonna tell it to my uncle so we could already replace the sending unit (and fuel pump if needed). Thanks for this answer.
