I am looking to purchase cams for my car. I have read the forums on the different cams available for the Z. Besides the basics ( pistons, heads, etc), I know very little about the actual internal parts of a motor. With that being said, I will be only replacing cams, so all other internal parts related to the cams will be OEM.

I would like input from those of you who have installed cams in their car to me make a wiser decision on which cams to purchase.

Which cams are of good quality and which cams to stay away from?
Which cams did you guys purchase for your type of application?
Were the performance/gains what you expected?
What are the best cams for my type of application - my type of application is for street driving; non track use.

Basically, I am wanting a little extra HP and/or TQ.

This is for a NA setup. I have purchased all bolt-on mods available for intake and exhaust without "going into" the motor.

Please, all opinions and experiences are welcome!

With all of those bolt-ons you could probably get more from an Osiris tune than you could with cams. Of course if you got the cams and an Osiris tune, you could probably get 15-20 HP I would think.

A tune would be cheaper than cams+install.

I forgot to mention, I use Osiris. Off topic, this software is great and their service.....excellent! Any opinions on which cams would meet my needs.

Cams without a proper tuning = inefficient fuel burning = lost potential HP gains.

I have HKS Valcon VCAM Plus cams in my Cosworth engine and heads with many other mods but still an N/A engine. The HKS tuner tells me that some of the bigger cams such as the Nismo 2's can't be tuned to the same level of efficiency with the 3.5L displacement so you may get top end but it will be at the expense of bottom and mid-range. Boring and stroking may help with the bigger cams but you will need a slick tuner in any case to appreciate gains from your new cams.

If I am looking for more low to mid range performance, which cams would be best to use?

It's a total package answer including final drive you have. Look into threads with advice on the final drive and get virtually any 264 degree or greater cams and you will increase your bottom end and mid range. Still needs to be tuned though to get very noticeable gains. I also have an HKS F-Con Vpro engine managent system with all the bells and whistles. The cams are tunable and I get fantastic power at all levels.

Sorry for the late reply, but thanks for your advice. I will look into those cams. Although, purchasing might come at a "way" later date. And as far as a tune, I have learned that any mods installed needs a tune.

I found this out by someone telling me that I was blowing blue smoke out my exhaust. I found out that I was running way lean, luckily, I had the car tuned and no more smoke screen.
