Ok, need a quick rundown on cams. What to look for, what the specs mean, etc... Any takers?

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/camshaft.htm

for a primer on what the various specs mean.

I've had a chat with a couple of guys that have run 27x degree cams on their VQ35DEs, and they say they're not big enough. One of my mates put one in a Maxima and, even in a FWD sedan, he didn't feel like it was big enough.

"I swear, officer, its all factory options!"

Understeer is when you hit the tree with the front wheel.
Oversteer is when you hit it with the back.
Horsepower is how hard you hit the tree...
Torque is how far you drag it...

This is tempting... but it's too late in the evening for me to begin going down this rabbit hole. If nobody has helped you by the time I get home from work tomorrow, I'll tell you anything about cams that you need to know.

OK...

What specificly do you need to know? I will assume you know the basics to some degree... so what's stumping you? I'm lazy and don't feel like writing a book telling you stuff that you might already know.

note to self....Kenny, stay away from this thread, you don't need cams, although learning about them would be interesting.

Honestly? if that's the case, I would suggest reading that How Stuff Works link (or similar material). I can clarify the points you don't get, or would like more info on.

The How Stuff Works link doesn't give pros and cons of duration and lift (the two most commonly provided aftermarket camshaft properties).

I get duration for the most part, but I'm not entirely sure about lift.

Unless you're running cams with a wide enough duration to worry about valves and pistons colliding, what's the downside of running cams with a big lift?
