Y Pipes
From Nissan 350Z & 370Z Wiki
On this page you will find all of the available 350z y-pipes. We have tried to outline the appropriate specs such as material, diameters, and prices to make the selection process easier for you. There are different approaches to y-pipe design and the pictures below show how they vary in shape and structure. If you see any information that is incorrect or missing, please let us know or you can login and fix it yourself.
Notes
It is important to match pipe diameter of various exhaust components. A 3" y-pipe section dumping into a 2.5" rear exhaust section may cause undesirable sound (raspiness) and loss of power. However a 2.5" section dumping into a 3" section is OK. Some people have complained about this sound when installing some of the Y-Pipes with the stock exhaust.
Of course there are the ever more popular ebay y-pipes. We will leave these pieces off of this site as they are not viewed by us as "performance" parts by any measure. If you choose to buy knock off exhaust components, expect poor results.
OEM Y Pipe Overview
Weight: 16lbs
After the Catalytic Converters a Y Pipe is used to merge the two exhaust streams into one before it enters the Mid Pipe. The OEM Y Pipe is made from mild steel and is very restrictive. It consists of a standard aluminum heat shield and braided flex pipe fittings on each side of the Y Pipe to absorb vibration and flex in the exhaust system caused by engine torque and suspension movemnt.
Installation and removal of the OEM Y Pipe is rather simple. It can be done in a matter of minutes.
There are plenty of aftermarket Y Pipes to choose from if you simply want to change out this heavy, restrictive component of the exhaust. Take care to match exhaust components or your modifications can actually decrease performance.
Many exhaust systems include a Y Pipe or some other piece to replace the OEM Y Pipe. Additionally, the single turbo kits come with a downpipe that replaces the entire Y Pipe assembly.
