A major selling point of the Bose stereo system is the oversized 10inch subwoofer. It is called oversized, meaning it is slightly larger than a typical aftermarket 10inch subwoofer. Although it is a step up from the standard stereo system, the subwoofer does not meet or exceed the performance of aftermarket subwoofers. It has low power handling, paper cone construction, and foam surrounds.

Replacing the Bose subwoofer is not as simple as changing out the speaker. For one, the speaker size is not standard, so custom mounting brackets must be made in order to use the OEM subwoofer location. Additionally, virtually all aftermarket subwoofer require sealed enclosures of specified volume to perform well. The OEM subwoofer location may be used as long as it is either sealed or a custom box is used.
