General Information

The Nissan Patrol is a four-wheel-drive vehicle, manufactured by Nissan in Japan since 1950. The car is available in Australia, New Zealand, Central America, South America, South Africa, United Kingdom and the Middle East and it is in direct competition with the Toyota Land Cruiser. The Patrol is available with either two door (Short Wheel Base or SWB), four door wagon (LWB, Long Wheel Base) and Utility/Cab Chassis Variants. The old Y60 platform is still manufactured as a military vehicle to Asian countries & middle east. Even today, a modern Patrol is in production; with various engines still produced. Rumours of Nissan releasing this car under the Infiniti brand have proven to be false many times, but instead, Infiniti got a full-sized SUV called the QX56, based on the Nissan Armada.

History

This vehicle is sold in Japan under the name Nissan Safari. It has also been sold in Australia from the 1960s to the current day. Ford Australia rebadged the Y60 (GQ) Patrol in Australia from its release in 1988 to 1994 as the Maverick. Offroad it is a very capable vehicle and is renowned for its driveline strength and durability.

Engines

160 (MQ/MK) engine options included: SD33, SD33T, L28, P40.

Y60 (GQ/GR) engine options included: RB30S, TB42E, TB42S, RD28T, TD42 and TD42T.

Y61 (GR/GU) engine options included: TB45E, TB48DE, ZD30DDTi, RD28Ti, TD42, TD42T and TD42Ti.

Future

Nissan is planning a replacement for the now ageing Y61 (GU) Patrol for late 2006/early 2007 (The Y61 is essentially a facelifted and improved Y60 of which the basic design is now coming on over 20 years old). It is unlikely the next Patrol will be built in Japan. The platform it will use is unknown at this point in time however rumours point towards the next revision to be based on Nissan's F platform. This is the most likely platform for the next Patrol considering Nissan's efforts in regards to reducing manufacturing costs across their range of vehicles.
