Intake Overview

The 350z and G35 OEM intakes are well designed, and so you must be careful when upgrading to aftermarket ones. It is setup as a semi-ram type intake. Under speed, the front grill area directs air into the "snout" behind the bumper and pressurizes the airbox. The stock airbox provides great heat shielding for the filter. After going through the filter, air travels up a slightly curved plastic tube where it reaches the throttle body. The G35 has a resonated intake pipe that many owners change out for the 350Z intake pipe (also called z-tube}. Because the throttle body is servo controlled, there has been very few upgrades available for it. Air finally reaches the plenum where it is dispursed to the cylinders. It has been found that air is not distributed evenly between the cylinder due to the design of the stock plenum. Because of this, plenum upgrades have shown significant gains and have proven necessary with a forced induction system.

A performance intake filter will let the engine breathe easier and help all other engine mods achieve maximum performance. A full intake (also called a Cold Air Intake) may or may not improve air flow over the factory design. Many people prefer the stock design, and it has been dyno proven to be better than many aftermarket CAIs on some cars, particulary the G35. Unless you're going to go "full out NA" you may be better off with a $40 drop in K&N filter.
