Headers
From Nissan 350Z & 370Z Wiki
Welcome to the exhaust header page. Exhaust headers are often an overlooked upgrade for the Nissan 350Z. Many owners are quick to purchase a cat-back exhaust system, but few actually enjoy the benefits of a full engine-back exhaust package. Header design theory is very complex, but in the most basic form you should look for equal length tubing with a clean collector. There is significant power gains to be price by upgrading the 350Z exhaust manifolds to a more robust aftermarket header solution.
The major downside to header upgrades is the difficulty in their installation. The VQ35 is crammed in the 350Z's engine bay and you must be really creative to access the bolts, or have the money to pay for someone else to do the dirty work.
OEM Exhaust Manifolds
Weight: ~7x2 = 14lbs
The V configuration of the VQ35 series engine produces dual exhaust exits (3 cylinders per side). Nissan has included standard heat shielded exhaust manifolds on the 350Z and G35.
Accessing the exhaust manifolds is not an easy task. The cramped quarters of the engine bay coupled with some awkward bolt location provide for a rather tough job when pulling or installing exhaust headers or any type on the VQ35.
For those wanting to maximize engine performance in Naturally Aspirated form, headers can be purchased and installed in place of the standard manifolds. Take note that none of the aftermarket headers provide head shielding so header wrap or custom heat shields may be beneficial.
The OEM exhaust manifolds are replaced with turbo manifolds when a twin turbo kit is installed. However, the single turbo kits utilize the OEM manifolds.
Aftermarket Headers
There is no shortage of performance headers for the Nissan 350Z. Price range from a few hundred to a few thousand for some of the more exotic variants. Typical materials are ceramic coated mild steel, stainless steel, and even titanium for those willing to pay for it. This is an ongoing collection of 350Z headers and is meant as a starting point for your research. Visit our forum to chat with other Z owners about their thoughts and experiences with headers.
