Engine Dyno (FAQ)

A few helpfull tips on test procedures to help maximize accuracy of your dyno results.

1) Use a OBDII scanner to monitor engine coolant temps. Regulate each pull to 190'F +/- 3'F before each pull. Coolant temperature can make a big difference in test results

2) Be sure the engine and transmission is in thermal equilibrium before starting your baseline pulls. Also make sure the ECU is in perforance mode before starting baseline. When drivng to the dyno shop, do several WOT runs (in 3rd or 4th gear) from 1500 RPM to redline. Slam the throttle down untill you hit redline. This will put the ECU into performance mode and bring engine/transmission oil temps to equilibrium. When the ECU is in performance mode it helps eliminate ECU variables moving your results up or down while on the dyno. Equilibrium oil temps will provide the best dyno consistancy and results because oil viscosity won't be changing between pre/post pulls. Having the ECU in performance mode will also maximize consistancy and HP performance.

3) Turn the air conditioner on about 10 minutes before arriving to the shop. This also tends to improve consistancy and results. This insures the engine coolant temps will at about 185'-195'F when you arrive at the shop. It will also make it easier to regulate your coolant temps to 190'F when on the dyno. There will be less up or down thermal drift because the engine is well into a nominal equilibrium.

Note: Engine coolant temps can really be regulated anywhere between 180'F to 200'F so long as the same temperature is used for each pull. After each pull the coolant temperature will shoot up to about 205-210 but you can easily bring it right back down by turning on the AC (which turns on the radiator fans).
