- The vision of Altered Atmosphere Motorsports, Inc. came to life
in 1998. As a group of enthusiasts became very involved with racing
in the mid-90’s, it soon became apparent there was a lack of
experienced and knowledgeable performance shops in the area. This
lack of a reliable performance shops was a blessing in disguise as
it forced this group to first hand experience and learn everything
there is to know about an automobile over the next few years. With
the help of “done and experienced it all†Randy
Mahaffey and his know-how, enthusiast Mike Mahaffey opened up a
small 1,900sq. foot shop in Rockville, Maryland. Soon after, the
walls were packed with product and the small one bay shop was
overflowing with cars. The word was out…the tri-state area
finally had a reputable performance shop!
- After only a year, Mike Mahaffey teamed up with several
extremely knowledgeable people who also shared a love of racing and
modifying vehicles. This team became the staff of Altered
Atmosphere's new 7,500sq. foot facility located in Gaithersburg,
Maryland. Here the basic business ethic was carried on, an ethic of
being honest, providing unparalleled service, 100% customer
satisfaction, and a commitment to every customer who walked through
the door. Many project cars were created including a third
generation Toyota Supra that ran low 10's @ 135+mph, a fourth
generation full weight Toyota Supra that ran an astounding 10.0
without even making a full pass (the car was unfortunatly retired
after meeting the wall as it went through the traps), and Mike's
Stealth/3000GT that holds the ¼ mile record for the
Stealth/3000GT at 10.71 @ 137mph. To add to the excitement, Altered
Atmosphere Motorsports, Inc. became the proud owner of the first
All-Wheel Drive Dyno in the United States. This Dyno has been the
perfect tool for tuning the many 700hp, 800hp+ project cars we have
created.
- The word was out in force, and Altered Atmosphere Motorsports,
Inc. was well on its was to becoming the major contender in the
aftermarket import performance world. In no time Altered Atmosphere
Motorsports, Inc. was once again breaking at the seams, and the
7,500sq. foot facility seemed nearly as small as the first shop two
years before. The shop was again packed full of new products,
consistent 25+ cars waiting to be serviced and modified, and a new
team of dedicated employee’s.
- With the goal of being the ultimate performance shop, the
search for a new shop began mid-2001. After an extensive search, we
finally found a facility that could sufficiently house our
operations. The new facility is nearly 15,000sq. feet, and is
currently the home of Altered Atmosphere Motorsports, Inc. This
facility includes the necessary tools to effectively meet the part
demands of our many retail and wholesale customers, the necessary
equipment to expertly perform modifications and required
maintenance to our customer’s vehicles, and the necessary
diagnostic gear to safely tune any performance modified
vehicle.
- Our new facility not only allows us to efficiently meet those
demands of our customers, but has allowed us the capacity to
develop product when the available parts on the market do not meet
our expectations. We call these product AAM Spec. parts and they
can be seen extensively throughout our 3000GT and Stealth product
lines. We spend a lot of time researching and testing product
before we recommend it to our customers, so you can rest assured
your money is being spent wisely the first time.
- Whether you are stopping over for a simple oil change, ordering
a part online from our products catalogue, need a custom part
fabricated, or are leaving your car for a raced prepped motor, we
are here to help. Give us a call 301-330-8835 or send an email to
Sales@alteredatmosphere.com, Service@alteredatmosphere.com to learn
more – you’ll be happy you did.
