Please see visit this link to learn more about the inner workings of the cats
Can I gut my stock Cats?
Yes. You can gut your stock catalytic converters, but it is not advisable. If increased exhaust gas flow is desired, it is recommended that you replace the OEM cat with an aftermarket high flow catalytic converter. The cats can also be replaced with test pipes (race pipes). High flow cats or test test pipes may not be legal in your area, check with local ordnances before removing (or modifying) the stock cats.
How much do the OEM Cats weight?
There are two catalytic converters on the 350z/G35 and each weighs in at ~23lbs, for a total of 46lbs.
If I replace my headers can I use the OEM Cats?
Yes.
If I install a cat-back exhaust can I use the OEM Cats?
Yes.
