Materials and Tools
- 10mm socket wrench
- phillips head screwdriver
- gloves
- silicone RTV(clear)
Procedure
Alright, this one was kinda lengthy so make sure you have a good 4 to 8 hours to do this. It was fairly simple and straight forward and required very little mechanical skill. just a fair degree of patience.
first off remove the bumper:
1. remove the 9 10mm bolts that attach the engine underbody tray to the bumper.
2.now carefully peel back the black plastic wheel well that is forward of your front bumper and remove the 2 10mm bolts and 1 10mm screw that attach the bumper to the fenders.
3. next remove the 6 plastic clips. just take a flat head screwdriver and pop the middle portion up and work them out of the holes.
4. remove your bumper and place it in a place where it wont get scuffed up.
the next step is to remove the headlight housings, this was fairly simple
1. remove 4 10mm bolts that attach the headlamp assy. to the frame. 1 bolt is above the assy, 2 are below and face the front, and 1 bolt is below and to the side.(see above)
2.next angle the headlamp assy. and disconnect the connector. once this is done the headlamp comes right out.
3 remove the plastic cover on the back by turning it 1/8th a turn counter clockwise and it comes right off.
4.next remove the hid power source from the bottom be removing 3 screws then unclipping the ground wire and hid wire harness.
5. Remove remaining lamps and remove the wiring harness.
6. Remove the HID bulbs by unclipping the wire clip and sliding it out. be careful not to touch the glass of the bulb itself with your bare hands..
next it opening the headlamp housing.
1. there are 5 phillips head screws that you must remove on the outside of the housing.
2. preHeat your oven to 250 deg. Farenheit.
3. set a wet piece of cardboard into the oven and place your headlamp on top of it. there should be no bulbs or wires attached.
4.bake the assy. for 8 minutes.
5. remove the headlamp assy. and pry the clear lens from the black rear housing. i would recommend wearing a pair of mechanics gloves for this as the headlamp is warm.
6. if the seal is not fully melted then bake it for a couple more minutes.
Now is the part that takes patience. 1. to remove the chrome frome from the clear lens remove 2 small phillips head screws and the chrome piece comes right out.(easy) after that the orange reflector pops right out.
2.now mask off any parts you do not want painted with painters masking tape. i used the 3M blue automotive masking tape and it worked great. take your time here because once its done, its done.
3. spray paint the parts of the headlamop assy you want to be blacked out. i pained the entire chrome frame on the clear lens and the useless chrome parts of the headlamp reflectors.
4. After everything dries reassemble the housing. and screw in the chrome(now black) reflector.
next you must back the housing again
1. with your oven on 250 put the wet cardboard in with the housing and heat it for 4 to 5 minutes.
2. press the housing back together as best you can. if you need to reheat for 1 to 2 more minutes.
3. I had a complete seal on mine but if you are not sure on yours then take clear silicone RTV and seal the housing with that. its better to be safe than sorry.
4. reinstall the 5 phillips head screws
to reinstall the housing and bumper just go in reverse of removing it and enjoy.!
Finished
To Include
Removing the Bumper
- Open up your hood and remove 6 clips on top of your bumper with a flat head screwdriver.
- Under your car has (8)10mm screws that need to be remove with a 10mm socket wrench
- Where you fender and bumper touch, on each side has a 10mm screws. Remove them.
- From inside, under the headlight should have (2)10mm screws. Remove them
- The front bumper should come right off, if not please double check for any left over screws that may have not come off.
Removing the Headlights
- There are (4) 10mm screws that need to be remove with 10mm socket wrench.
- Once you pull out the headlights, remove the wire clip that hold it and everything should be completely out.
- Behind the headlights has a weather seal to protect the bulbs. Remove that by turning counter-clock wise
- Since my Z has HID, on the bottom should be the ballast that need to be remove using a phillip screwdriver (3 screws each side)
- Unclip the ballast and remove the wire from it.
- Remove all turns/parking light bulbs.
- Remove the HID bulbs and wire using a screwdriver. Including the wire clip that hold down the bulb. BEWARE!!! REMEBER HOW IT IS PLACE. Putting it back is a pain for me.
Opening the Headlights
- On your headlight should have small phillip screws around them that need to be remove (forgot how many)
- Preheat your cooking oven @ 250 degree for 5 minutes.
- 5 min is up, sit a piece of WET cardboard on top of the plate.
- Place your headlight on top of the WET cardboard. (make sure no wires or bulbs are attached
- Bake your headlight for 7 minutes.
- After 7 minutes, remove it from the oven. The silicone should be melted. With your bare hand, try to open it up by tugging and pulling. If you are not the Incredible Hulk like me, you may need a 2nd person to help you or use a flat head to pry it open.
- While opening, make sure no silicone stick inside your housing. If yes try to clean it off.
- In case you can't open it. re-wet the cardboard and throw it back in for about 3 minute should be good.
Black Housings
- The other housing is held by (2)phillip screwdriver that need to be remove. Everything else should be out.
- The orange strip is easy to remove so I'am sure anyone can do this.
- Paint the outer housing with primer.
- Once primer you paint the other housing with flat black paint.
- I paint only a small portion of the inner housing but you'll need masking tape to cover the part where you don't want paint.
- You need to let the paint dry first before putting everything back together.
- However you want to do is your black housing is up to you
Reassemble Headlights
- Push your headlight back together as much as you can.
- re-wet the cardboard.
- @ 250 degree place the headlight on top of the cardboard for3 min. (not nesscary to pre-heat)
- Remove it and push your headlight back together as much as your can. Try your best not to have any opening.
- Once together, have some silicone (can pick one up @ your local auto store) and spread it along the housing. this will cover any open holes.
- Let it dry before re-installing them.
- Those tiny phillip on step 1 of OPENING UP THE HEADLIGHT, I don't think you can put them back on, but I may be wrong.
Done
Once the silicone is dry, just go backward on removing everything. Here is some personal tips.
- Begin this project early, in case you do things wrong you still have sunlight.
- A helping hand is always A+. Be thankful and treat them out of lunch.
- Please have all the nessacary tools ready
- Organize all the screws your remove.
- Re-installing the HID is a pain IMO. Please remeber how they're place so you know how to install them.
- Make sure everything is properly seal. You don't want water or moisture in there. Because the ballast is on the bottom. I'am afraid that water gets in and sink to the bottom it will damage your ballast.
- Like all DIY projects do at your own risk and please don't blame me if you don't like it.
I hope that this information really help you guys. All I ask in return is just credits or a twin turbo kit . If there is any questions feel free to ask or email me @ LaoSiFu@Aol.com.
