So I've read a lot of forums and I think I'm having the same issue as a lot of people in that the syncros in my transmission are going. My Z will grind shifting up into 3rd sometimes as well and downshifting into 3rd sometimes. I'm wondering if there are any other transmissions that will fit into the 03' and not have the dreaded syncro issue rather than rebuilding a flawed transmission.
Thank you
You could try to purchase a used or rebuilt CD009 six-speed tranny. That was the latest spec Z33 tranny and improved in many ways (but not third gear). Before you do that, I'd suggest trying a tranny oil change. Redline MT85 is a synthetic lubricant engineered with enough friction to allow the syncros in our trannys to function. Three quarts should do the job. Be sure to post back the results if you try (or already have done it) this solution.
Okay thank for your feedback! So I did get the tranny fluid changed. Not with what you recommended but with royal purple because i got it changed before I read your reply. I didn't ask which specific one he used (I should've). My mechanic said that the fluid that came out wasn't great but it wasn't bad, there wasn't any shavings in it either. So now that I've been driving it for a bit the grindings has occurred less. Usually it happens shifting into third for the first couple shifts in the morning. Doesn't grind down shifting anymore. Also I noticed that I can avoid the grinding in the morning if I double clutch. One time it grinded the tiniest bit after double clutching. I figure I just have to use the tranny until the syncros completely go and then figure out if I'm gonna replace the tranny or rebuild it.
Not paying attention to which lubricant was used in your tranny is a big mistake. I don't use Royal Purple, but you should know which product it was, the specific viscosity and whether it fits Nissan recommendations for tranny use. Some lubricants contain pressure additives which can actually eat and degrade metals like brass that the syncros in your tranny are made of.
Gearbox oils are not subject to combustion products and will usually "look good", unless there's a lot of broken and degraded parts in it. Your attitude towards this problem is probably the most concerning: rather than learning what your Z really needs, you're blindly following your mechanic's recommendations and waiting for your tranny to go. Sorry for the harsh tone, but your Z deserves better...
Hahaha well thanks for your honesty. I'll do some more research and make sure the correct tranny fluid was put in.
Thanks again
