HI, Just got back from the dealer and they told me my timing belt is cracked. I thought that Z's dont have belts but chains. I have a 2005 350z with only 40,000 miles. Do i need to have it serviced? Thanks in advance.

i would ask for clarification first. but the obvious answer for if you should get it fixed would be most definitely yes. this is a necessary part that you need to even have your engine work. if that goes out, you are not moving anywhere.

Hi guys,I read somewhere on here that the Zed had timing chains,so its defo not that which is cracked..Most probably be the serpentine belt, which iirc serves yur water pump, fan, alternator etc and runs off yur crank..yeah get it changed if its cracked, but its not a timing belt,so no chance of bent valves and holed pistons if it does go..Someone please correct me if I am wrong..

Thanks for all the replies. I did call them back and they said it was the drive belt. How important is that one? Sorry, but I dont know that much under the hood.

If it is just barely starting to crack you will be fine for a little (maybe a month or 2) but if it is cracked bad I would change it asap.

They aren't all that hard to change, you could probably do it yourself.

You have 2 drive belts under the hood, one for your a/c which wont hurt anything it if breaks (belt might slap something though) But you will only lose A/C.

If the other one goes out you will lose power steering, alternator, and possibly even your water pump.

Seems to have been answered but some more info for clarification:

2003-2006 has 2 drive belts (1 for the AC as mentioned and second for the Power Steering and Alternator)
2007+ has one belt for all

Timing chain drives the water pump not the drive belt

Ah thank you. I wasn't sure, I have never gotten in there to look. I'm used to workin on old SBC's that have the water pump hangin off the front of the motor. I know most new 4bangers have the water pump ran off the timing belt, but I didn't know if ours did or not because we have a chain.
